i have owned 3 rangers, an 88 and two diff 98's. All were solid trucks.. However i would drive my taco over them any day. Much more reliable, better on gas, and in my experience much much better offroad. Toyota for life from here on out

I have an 84 ford ranger single cab with a long bed, 4x4, and dual tanks. That thing is nice. Only problem is that its going on it's third 2.3L engine. Might just put the 350/4L60E set up I have lying around if this engine gives out as well. But it won't compare to the current taco I have. My ranger is really a Found Off Road Dead kinda vehicle.

Ford has forsaken the Ranger for quite some time. If they put half the energy into the Ranger that they do into the F150 it would be a pretty sweet truck.

i had a 2004 ranger 4x4 4L and shit was a tank..got me back and forth from northeast jersy to queens, nyc(about 20 miles) for 3 years straight for school and for work, i had 1400 lbs of sand/gravel numerous times. felt like a real truck. tacoma rides better and has so much more features but feels like an suv. my taco is manual but i feel like the auto shifter should be in the steering column, no? def like both..ranger took watever i gave it and had 100k miles when i traded it in about a month ago but ive heard of a taco have almost 400k miles b4 needing a engine change so.....

^^this, Ford hasn't updated the Ranger for some time and I know folks who've had great reliability from them. Ford has struggled whether to discontinue it or bring over the new 4-dr Ranger from Europe/Auzzie. Ford doesn't want to lose sales in the F-series, to not give up the 35 -year best-selling vehicle/truck title, so they are leaving the new Ranger out of the American market. Ranger has had a great run but it's old technology now and will be phased out this year. I would've bought a new Ranger had they brought them to the USA, but love my Tacoma too!

Have test driven a brand new ford ranger about 3 times, I prefer my pre historic jeep, plus for like 2k more get a taco more of a truck than a ranger will ever be, not to mention comfort and durability along with reliability when you need it.. Needless to say but rangers are cute lil trucks I guess but so outdated and lame. Friends has had a few and most parts were assembled in Mexico and let's sayy my friends won't be sticking with rangers

Old GF had one. Was a slow piece of crap. Had NO balls what so ever. Was uncomfortable sucked down the gas...just...not a good truck. She loved my taco tho......Can't beat the reliability factor...no company can touch yotas reliability.

I wouldnt even consider buying a Ranger, but I do have some good things to say about them. We have 2 Rangers here used as work trucks. if they can take the neglect and abuse put out by these irresponsible co-workers, they are pretty tough trucks. These guys never change the oil or any preventive maintenance. None! I have checked the oil in them a few times and one was 2 quarts low, and the other was 3 quarts low. When I say no preventative maintenance, i mean none!

The only thing I have seen break on them so far is one ball joint fell out from lack of grease/maintenance, and a couple of U joints from lack of grease.

The Ranger is the same as it was in 1998. It's 10 year old tech.

As far as american made.. both are assembled here. If you want me to feel sorry for supporting an engineer in japan versus a union boss in detroit, that's kind of a wash to me.

You could look up the domestic content, but then they'd probably just say "All the profit goes right back to Japan!" Then you could point out that both companies are publicly traded, and that Toyota profit really goes to investors all over the world, probably even them if they have 401ks, and then they'd probably spit chaw in your face and tell you to buy 'mercan

Fords are mostly made out of country, they are only designed in America. Toyotas are designed by the geniuses in Japan, then manufactured in American factories. Tell them that.

I drive a 09 Ranger 4X4 with the FX4 package for work. Gotta admit, I think the interior is much more spacious than my 03 taco, and sometimes feels more comfortable on long drives. However this small detail holds no hand in the overall quality between the two. The ranger has 19,000 miles on it and has more rattles/squeaks than my 03 taco with 91k on it! And my taco can go WAAAYYYY more places than the shitty ranger haha.
