Big decision, need some help.

So here is my question for all you guys. Currently i have a 2003 dodge 2500 with the diesel thats fully suspended. I however dont have any need for a truck this big, and have always wanted a Tacoma. My little brother just got a 2000 Tacoma and my itch to sell my truck and get one is back. I dont need to tow anything other than a small flatbed trailer with a few quads or bikes. The main thing that makes me want to go this route is the truck has 170k on it and i still owe 17k. I would just like to hear some of your views on the subject and how you would go about it. Pic of my current truck. And if i did sell it, it would be for a 2nd gen dbbl cab.

 

Well kbb is only like 15 something. And around here the two things that always sell for over book are diesels and toyota's. But i have that much into it between everything i have done. I guess another question would be to those of you who have had a full size truck, do you miss it?

 

i went from a nissan titan to the tacoma. the things i miss are the power (305 hp and 380 torque) and the plush comfort on highway trips. i dont miss the gas mileage, parking a big truck, and the extra cost in insurance and maintenance.

i am very happy with the tacoma.

 

No I don't miss it, but I didn't have a "need" for it either. IE: I don't pull a huge boat or trailer. I actually have never pulled anything I couldn't pull with my Tacoma, even when I had my Dodge.

I also love the 20+ MPG's I get in the Tacoma. I had the 5.9 360 gas in my 01 Dodge and with no lift running 33x12.50's I was lucky to get 12 MPG. Oh and the resale value of Dodge's is terribly bad. I had a decent loan on my 01 but still owed 16-17k on it when I got rid of it in 05. With 100k miles it was only worth 12ish .. it was a 1500 4x4. My Tacoma blue books for somewhere around 25-26 right now, I paid 23,500 and only owe about 17.

Occasionally I miss the interior space but the back seat in my 09 Tacoma access cab is the same size if not bigger than the back seat in my 01 Dodge. The width is definitely smaller tho .. I miss the bench seat with the huge fold down compartment/armrest. That's the only thing I miss.

 

I went from a 2002 2500hd duramax Chevrolet 4x4 with 150000 mile to a v6 2010 Tacoma dbl cab off road 4x4. I sold my chevy because I quit pulling the big trailers around on the farm and hated the diesel fuel prices and mpg. The things I miss from the full size are the power and room. The things I do not miss are the repair cost and the gas mileage and diesel prices. All in all I am happy with my Tacoma. I have only put a leer topper and a brake controller on my Tacoma, but when I get the money for a 3" lift and bigger wheels and tires, so it looks like a 4x4, I will be much happier. That being said I do miss my diesel and it was paid for. But the 18-19 mpg makes the transition much easier.

 

The mileage isnt rele my concern because my truck will pull a hand calculated 22 on the highway and 18 in town. But i dont feel like a couple mpg's will make that big of a difference as the prices for gas are cheaper than diesel. And yes the power will be missed.. Tacomas dont run 13.9's in the quarter. I have driven a couple 3.4 and 4.0 tacomas and they are quick enough to get me in trouble, but thats not what im worried about. But it sounds like you guys dont miss your big trucks all that much, which is good to hear.

 

x2, I miss the rumble of the V8, the power and highway comfort of my old Chevy 1500. Gas mileage is a little better in the Tacoma and commuting in and out of Boston daily, the smaller truck is easier to maneuver and makes more sense for my lifestyle.

 

I don't want to pour cold water on your dreams and not sure of your financial situation - but you still owe a ton on your truck which has already depreciated quite a bit. Consider holding on to it to pay it down, then sell it for some $$$ to use to get into a Tacoma.

But I hear you man - when you get that itch, hard not to scratch!

 

^^^ I know where your coming from. This is more of a pleasure truck. I have a 2011 focus i drive to work every day. About 85 miles round trip. So i actually make 2 payments every month. It seemed worth it to me to keep the miles off my truck since it already had so many. But if i were to get a tacoma the focus would be my trade in..

 

I'm moving out of a Gen 2 Ram with a 360 into the Tacoma.

My Ram has been a money pit. The gas mileage is horrible, and I just need something smaller.

 

I traded my paid off 07 Ram 1500ST for a Tacoma 4x4 Access Cab, 6 speed last winter, and aside from a smaller bed, the Toyota does everything I need including pulling a heavier trailer.

You are upside down on the Dodge and you need to fix that before you can sell it.
