were the 1st gen tacomas made in japan?

 

No, Tacomas don't even exist in Japan. The toyota truck over there is the Hilux. Different body style and motor, etc.

 

I don't think there are any. I think they make the Hilux.

 

I'm pretty sure some were made in Japan, but mostly were made in the U.S.

 

All the 1st gen Tacomas were made in Fremont, Cali

 

Maybe I'm thinking of the 2nd gens, I remember a thread a while back where people were talking about the vins on their trucks and some were made in Japan. I thought some were first gens too.

 

This was true of 4runners. If the vin starts with a "J", they were assembled in japan.

 

Yes, some of the tacomas came from Japan, the vin number started with J...I've found two source that say some of the tacomas were built in Japan.

All of them start with a 5.

 

Digiratus is right...tacomas were built in killakali, 4runners of the same year (3rd gens) were built in japan.

 

The 5 means it was built in a toyota plant. Yes some are not made in a toyota plant. ( maybe over seas some where?)

Im glad mine was made right here in the USA. Nummi is long gone.

I know some are built in mexico (TMMBC). The first 4 doors where made there.

Also, if you look in your door jam on the 1st gen. models, it says "MANF. TOYOTA MOTOR COMPANY, CALIFORNIA INC."

The 2nd gen. models are made in California as well and San Antonio, Texas.

 

I misread the article, I read this part, "The compact trucks (2 and 4WD) are built at the New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc (NUMMI) in Fremont, California, the Honsha Plant in Toyota City, Japan, and all truck beds are produced at TABC in Long Beach, California. 4WD trucks are also built in the Tahara Plant in Tahara, Japan." and missed this part,"All Tacomas are produced at NUMMI."

So I was wrong and all 1st gen Tacomas were assembled in the U.S.
