Might I suggest designing the box to retain the hooks? I'd be pissed if I went and bought a used truck and found some dude removed them. Don't know as if I'd check for those before I'd roll off the lot.... Anyhow..... Good luck

Drill out the spot welds, then take a hacksaw blade and saw in between the hook and wall. Don't use a hammer or you'll end up bending the crap out of the back wall.

    49 CFR Parts 571 and 596

New vehicles are federally mandated and required to have them (from the manufactor), I don't know how this affects removal by an individual.

Surely you will not get pulled over and asked for your restraints, but removing could affect resale and trade-in for you later.

I just drilled out the 3 spot weld points and they popped right off.

These are only used for the center upper restraint and are not needed because you still have the two lower LATCH points in the seat cushions. Although it really depends on the type of car seat that your using, you really only need the lower two points for the majority of the seats out there. Honestly, I have never used the top center latch...only the two lower ones.

I took a Dremel and a cutting wheel and cut the weld between the hook and the backing plate, then knocked the hook off of the plate.
