It wouldn't recommend locking the rear when you haul ass through the desert without seeing what it does to your handling first. It will significantly change your drift and tracking, just FYI.

While the vehicle is stopped, hold in the VSC OFF switch for about 3-5 seconds (until indicator lights come on). This is in H2 or H4. In L4, there is no traction control unless you push the A-TRAC button (4WD Off Road Tacomas only).

Of course, you can't race around the desert in low range, now can you... so no locker either.... Unless you are a 2WD Prerunner Off Road TRD.

The traction control only works if you loose traction, so you are normally an open differential truck.

You go spinning around in a nice 2010 Tacoma, well... the VSC will keep you from spinning out by correcting drift. Even with you manually shutting off the VSC, it is still lurking and will come back on if the truck senses you are about to roll over!

Maybe, just silence the annoying beeper instead of shutting of the nifty system?

You and the OP are not the only ones reading this... so when I pop in, it is to clarify or add something for the newbees or the old bees! You hadn't suggested to silence the beeper, which I think would be the first choice if it annoys anyone... afterall the technology that went into the VSC and TRAC systems, might as well get the most out of what you paid for, right?

I agree if the beeping annoys you, turn off the beeping... but the system improves off road drivability with limited slip action front and rear. Have you not seen the rave reviews by the non Off Road Tacoma owners who have done the 4-Lo Trac Mod (yellow wire mod)? Trac works so well in H4, they figured out how to fool the system to give it to them in L4.

If there was a true VSC OFF but the TRAC stayed on, then that would be a good compromise.

VSC sucks when on loose ground and especially sucks in snow

In the dirt maybe, but on a rain slick road where you take the corner too fast (in an empty bed pickup) the thing works at stopping the spin-out of the back end... Feels like it does when you use 4WD in the rain for better traction and control.

...and with TRAC and VSC nobody needs to use 4WD in the rain or A-TRAC (that is just a stupid statement that makes it look like you don't know what it is made for).

If you're talking to me , using 4wd in the rain is retarded .

I was editing my post when you quoted me originally , VSC sucks in loose grip conditions like gravel and especially snow .

    I didn't bring up Atrac

to turn off traction control all you have to do is restart your truck and hold the traction control button for about 5 seconds. the little cars with skid marks and auto lsd light should come on then you have no traction control what so ever
