Anyone come up with a hook and a steel backing plate to take more pull/weight than the stock d-rings? I'm trying to find a way to make a real strong anchor for a bike lock/chain, a Kryptonite New York chain. Bullet proof chain, literally.

Not sure what you're asking here...but if you install the mil-surp D-rings to the bed bolts, you can probably put quite a lot of load on the ring.

I'm looking for a higher load plus stronger metal. The Kryptonite chain is 1/4" hardened steel, can't be cut with a hacksaw. So I want an anchor strong enough to take the load of tightening with rachet tie downs as well as hacksaw resistant, like a hardened steel hook, to equal the strength of the chain.

The anchor point/plate must cover the hex nut or use a carriage bolt so it can't be removed with tools. If I can't use a carriage bolt, a hex bolt could be used to anchor the hook. Then put a plate over the hex bolt with just the hook exposed (with a slot just large enough to let the hook stick out) to attach the chain lock.

I'm thinking this could work. But where can I get hardened steel hooks/D-rings?

I don't know what you're trying to secure to the bed, but if it is that valuable they're just going to take the truck. And even if your chain, lock, and bed anchor are all hacksaw resistant, they aren't resistant to cut-off saws with diamond blades.

At some point, you just have to buy better insurance.

    mountain bikes mainly.

sure there's always a way to steal something but i'm going to make them work for it.

so besides the better insurance, stealing-the-whole-truck, and diamond hacksaw blades issue, i'm still thinking about the anchor. if you've other ideas for that i'm open to your creativity.

I love this idea of adding more tie downs to the bed. I have wanted to do this ever since I got my truck in 08. I am curious about where everyone got their d rings ( other than Toyota dealers and the army surplus site) because I'd like to do this mod today or in the next couple of days.

I would say have a slot cut in the bed so that a large loop made from about 3/4" diameter hardened steel can be welded directly to the frame.

Or cut a large enough hole/holes to run your chain through and loop around the frame.

Thanks for the part source.. I just got mine today and installed them. They look heavy duty (better than stock). I have not cut my mat yet.

I did the same thing, but I bolted the D rings right through the rubber mat, so nobody could steal it, and it looks more finished.

that's gonna make it hard if you ever need to take the mat out. I have taken my out on a couple of occasions when I've wanted things to slide. Not to mention, there' no way you can torque the bolts

I got my '05 this Spring and it wasn't very well maintained by the previous owner. At the forward end of the bed, there was enough dirt to cover and clog the drain holes. I poked a twig in the drain holes and washed the bed and mat with a garden hose. Problem solved. I'd consider doing that maybe once a year.

I'm planning to do this next weekend when the parts arrive, on my long bed. Because of the different footprint of the bed and mat, I'm planning to cut circular holes in the mat.

I figure a circle is harder to cut (and make it look good), but it has no corners to snag and possibly tear. Will post pics.

I was gonna use a hole saw to cut the holes... just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I thought about that, but I'm gonna try to use my dremel before heading to the Depot.

I was thinking the same thing. Installed my rings yesterday and picked up a 3" Milwaukee holesaw that has fine teeth. It's labeled for use to install recessed lights. I had to get an arbor too so combined it was something like $40 - ouch.

Figured a regular holesaw would tear up the rubber too much.

Not sure 3" is the best size but I'll give it a shot and see how it goes.
