Tire / Rim size question

I will be going with a 3" OME setup very soon and have decided to go with 285/75 16 BFG KM2's. I would like to keep the stock TRD OR wheels and I know in order to do this I will need to run spidertrax spacers. My question is, has anyone run into problems using TRD OR wheels with a tire this wide? Looking at the stock set up with Rugged Fails it already looks like it is pushing it with 265's. Any insight would be helpful. Post pics if possible. Thanx.

I just had my OME lift installed today, running 265 Duratracs... lemme get pics uploaded real quick... standby...

In my opinion, the taller 265s fill out the wheel wells just fine. The 285s aren't any taller, and will only stick out half an inch further.

 

285/75/16 is taller than 265/75/16. You can fit a 285 on a 7" rim.

 

My bad, you are correct sir.
I was thinking of 285/70s. The 75 profile will give you about another inch (~33s).

 

Check the tire manufactuered website and it lists a range of approved rim widths.

 

Hey KPT I have been researching lifts for a while. I currently have a 4x4 4 cylinder and I notticed you have top offroad package you can get and you went with the OME lift. Can you tell me what the exact parts you used were for the front and back? When I look ome it takes me to third party site and there a lot of different options. what did you go with?

 

You must be thinking of someone else because I do not have a TRD offroad and I have the bilstein 5100 lift, not the ome.

KPT sorry I really messed that up. My 4 cylinder does have the bilstein shocks. I am going to look at your build and see what you did. I am pretty sure I want to go bilstein.

 

they will work fine on the stock wheels with spidertrax spacers of course...you will rub on the cab mount when you flex her though so alil cutting and welding is in your future....thats one of the many reasons i went tall and skinny

 

Yeah I've been going back and forth between 285/75 - 16's and 255/85 - 16's. Its a tough decision. I am still on the fence.

 

i can tell you severl things..but most important is...........the only reason to run the 285 over the 255 is looks....with the 255 you will have more ground clearence ,its taller...less on road contact patch and barely affected my milage......aired down there just as good if not better then 285's yes ive put them head to head almost the same truck both km2's mine 255 and the other 285......there quiter on the road ...slightly lighter in weight...so i personally like the wider tire but my build was about function and i deff do NOT regret my choice..

 

Do you have an onboard air setup. I have heard that the 255's are good if not better than 285's when aired down. I don't mind airing down but have no way to air back up.

 

I read a pretty good article on the science behind why skinny tires are better for most offroading. Google the baja taco..it should be somewhere on that site
