Auto tranny rebuild

Ok I know I will probably get some flack for this but here goes. My tranny is pretty much shot after 252000 miles of abuse. I have an 01 d/c 4x4 with the 3.4 and automatic. I have looked at 3g he level tens and I really like them but I dont have 5k right now. I am thinking about rebuilding it myself. I have acess to a press and I am a fairly good mechanic. I have pulled the tranny before to replace the torque converter but have never broken into the internals. Has anyone done this before? What do you all think?

Me ive have never taken on apart yet. But i do work on automatic trans for living for ford, But from what i have herd from my buds at toyota they dont open them up to rebuild. All they do might be replace a torque converter or a vavle body. toyota jus has a reman programe witch i think is 3yrs/60000 warrinty if you buy a reman. there are rebuild manuals from aftermarket publishers and the factory service manuals, not 100% sure on FSM. If you do decide to do this yourself IPT sells a rebuild kit witch includes the friction disc,and bands and seals and gaskets.

 

I hate to ask this and don't mean to offend but have you ever seen inside an auto trans? It is the biggest clusterfuck I've ever seen... Our shop teacher last year had us tear into one that was never going back into a car to make sure none of us would ever attempt to rebuild one ourself. There were springs and little ball bearings and ATF flying all over the place. It certainly convinced me.

 

Oh come on there so much to play with exspecialy when you try to remove a snap ring and it hits you in the four head.

 

its not that bad at all.

Me and some buddies pulled mine all the way apart and swapped output
shafts for 4wd conversion, just be careful about remembering what goes
where but its really not hard, only hard part is lining up the clutch plates,
thats a pain in the ass

but its definitely doable. I have a empty transmission all the internals a pump a pan and a valve body, (all for sale) lol but let me know if want to see anything,
ask me questions on it,

and here I have a giant a340 manual that walks you through
every step to disassemble and inspect, etc, etc...
way more than you need to know but it is very useful,

But I say hell yeah you should try and do it!!

if you got the tools time and space I say do it,
besides if everything goes well there isn't anything more satisfying than
pulling off a big project.

 

Oh it absolutely blew my mind when I opened it up it was so cool but there's no way in hell it would ever have gone back together

 

Thats just for an idea of what you'll be dealing with

but its not as bad as it looks just the snap rings and
clutch plates like I said.. there are only 2 loose pieces that will want to come out...

and mark your bolts on the VB they are different lengths

 

a lil off topic but on topic at the same time.. do they make a rebuild kit with a shift kit? say down the road whren i rebuild my motor i add a little hp i would like to have a harder shift mayb bark the tires

 

As far as I know just upgrade kit for the vb for the FI guys

 

well i think in a auto trans the shift kit comes from the VB its all controlled on how the fiuld flows or something like that... idk trans's are confusing to me. i take it FI is fuel injected? i have fuel injection

 

Forced induction! like a supercharger,
so the tranny is upgraded to handle more power

 

Thanks for all the comments. I am going to rebuild mine myself and keep it as a backup but I have a buddy that works for toyota corporate and he is getting me a new one at less than cost so I think thats the way I will go.

Ok well I talked to Pat at level ten yesterday and he has a pretty reasonable package deal for about 3200 with t/c and shipping. I plan to supercharge the engine when I rebuild it later on down the road so I am going with the level ten. They also offer a 3 year unlimited mile warranty with it the toyota one wass only a year. I am willing to pay a little more for the better quality ( ansd my wife said ok ). I will let yopu all iknow how it does when i put it in.

Yes it is for the 4x4. I didnt go on the site I just called them. I know gadget is running a level ten and I am pretty sure his 4runner is 4x4. Just give them a call if you are interested, they have great coustomer service.
