That's the reason I wanted a manual tranny (sounds dirty) in my DD car. But not for the truck... it's too clunky feeling.

    Nah, it's glass, man.
The Aisin 5 speed won't cover mistakes but they're smooth when you shift 'em pure.

I owned a couple of manuals in the past and decided after having a manual with a boat, the next truck was going to be an automatic.

I drove my car for the first time in a while a couple days ago. Even if it was just down the driveway, it sure made me miss driving a manual transmission

We currently have both a manual and an automatic Tacos, both 4x4s. The manual has the i4 and the auto obviously has the 6. The auto is much more convenient, particularly at uphill stop signs with another vehicle on my bumper or in traffic. But the manual i4 gets much much better mileage. The 6 auto is averaging about 17mpg in both city and hiway while the i4 manual gets 20-21. Now we have to get rid of one and we just keep going back and forth, in large part because the gf--who is a greenie and loves the better i4 mileage--doesn't like to drive the i4 with her short (but cute!) legs. A dilemma!

manual is the way to go, espicially for the 2nd. generation toyotas, the added 6th gear adds to fuel economy versus the 5 spd. auto. i ahve a 06 manual, shifts smoothe since i got it, automactics are boring anyway. And if you upgrade the exhaust system for sound quality it sounds better with a manual.

The auto has been getting better fuel mileage behind the V6. There is a thread here that addresses this unusual fact.
The manual will typically beat the auto, behind the I4.
These are averages, individual driving habits will of course vary the results.

Check the final ratios and you will see that high gear = about 25% reduction.
IOW, taking the 5spd manual, 4th is 1:1 and 5th is .73:1, the others are similar.

If its got any TQ at all then AUTO all the way. If you want it for fun or because it's fast as shit, manual, auto if it's a really good auto and you want it as a DD. If its got no power, there's no way to make it fun so just do an auto unless it's a terrible drivetrain in the first place.
    For instance:
Expedition (has no manual but that doesn't matter): auto because there's enough usable torque to torque your balls off.
Acura TL-S: manual cause it's awesome in 6 speed form, if it's gonna be a DD get an auto since the auto on it is badass as it is and has paddle shifters.
Mazda3: terrible engine and tranny so just get a manual so you don't have to stab your own foot everyday for getting the auto and you only have a terrible engine. Manual adds a little more fun to its slowness also. (sadly, I got the auto...and it sucks fatty hairy sweaty balls)

I prefer a manual; you have more/ better control over the vehicle.

I love my 6-speed manual! I would definitely suggest that. But the toyota auto transmission is really good too.

none except for crappy hub caps and floor mats.
I've always driven manual. Love em'. The only problem is that most other people don't know how to drive them. I go racing every month in the summer in the middle of nowhere. If I get hurt- which I have on a few times- I need my Wife to be able to drive me to the hospital. She can't drive manual though. So far I've been lucky.

Manual--auto wear out brakes. In the mtns. a lot in SW CO. One drawback to manual is that if your wife is putting or taking out you and your boat.

Always had manuals, the one auto I've owned is for sale. More control is the biggest reason.
