Difference??

What is the difference between a TRD Sport and A TRD Off Road? I mean aside from asthetics (stickers, tires, hood scoop). The engine is the same. i even think the suspension is the same...since many of us are getting the TSB performed.

Anyone have spec sheets to compare???

 

Looks like everything is exactly the same except for the color-keyed parts and the wheel/tires. Suspension is the same too. Looks like the marketing genius at Toyota pulled the wool over the consumer's eyes again?

The main difference:

The TRD offroad comes with a selectable locker
THe TRD Sport comes with Limited slip

 

From what i've heard the off-road has beefier springs

 

Suspenson is basically the same for both TRD's except the offroad has the variable wound front springs, and the sport on road has a few mm thicker front sway bar. A V6 non TRD model after the TSB will have the straight wound coils of the on road sport with the small front sway bar of the offroad model.

They do just get the shocks, but the non TRD's V6 models have the same front springs as the on road sport models. The "tuned" suspension on the on road sports is bilstein shocks and a bigger front sway bar. The "tuned" suspension of the off road pkg is Bilstein shocks and variable wound front springs. So if you install the Bilstein shocks front and rear on a V6 model you will have the same suspension as the on road sport model, minus the larger front sway bar, order the larger front bar and your suspension will be the exact same as the on road sport TRD (but of course not trim, wheels, tires etc.). You could order the variable wound front springs over the parts counter and have the exact suspension of the off road model (minus trim items).

Now, excuse my ignorance, but am I right that the sway bars are for tighter cornering? I'm pleased with my off-road's cornering, but it's interesting to know I could improve it.

That info is from the Toyota supplied info, and of course they tell you what they want you to know, or what they think is important. I supplemented this info by crawling around and looking at the front spring paint codes at several dealers, mostly at Atlanta Toyota since they have around 100 or so Tacomas at any time (about 35-40% 4WD & PreRunners). Attempted to do the same with Tundra rear leaf packs, but gave up in frustration due to too many small subtle variations in the overload leaf and the length and thickness of the bottommost (non overload) leaf in the main pack.

 

The locking differential is more capable for off-road than the limited slip.
