Anyone able to get dealers to match online prices?

I've gotten some quotes from local dealers on an accessory that you can find online around $400 - local dealer quotes are usually around $500, in one case, over $600. Not totally unexpected.

When I ask about a price match some just refuse, some offer BS lines like saying the online retailers aren't selling genuine Toyota parts (even though it's being sold by another dealer, with whom I have worked with before, no problem...)

This makes no sense to me. If I showed up in the service department with the part I bought online and asked them to install it in exchange for paying for labor, they'd do it. I've done that before. So why don't they want the profit from the part too, even if it's less than their asking price on the part? Sure they'd love to make $300 on this part, but with me I offer to let them make $150 or $0, and they pick $0.

Is there any way this makes business sense...? Am I missing something?

 

Sounds like when I had my dealer repair my chipmunk damage and it was going to cost me about $1000 more than what they agreed to take from my insurance company. They agreed to a labor rate of half of what I was going to be charged. I was prepared to have it towed out then pay their price straight up.

 

I don't really see what a bait and switch with an insurance company on labor has to do with matching an online price for parts, but okay...

 

Nope Our Dealer is really TIGHT

 

In order for both of us to get a low price we had to go outside the dealer since the price we were willing to give the dealer was way under what they are willing to do it for.

In San Diego, I can get my dealer to match any other advertised dealers prices. It's great when they run oil change specials. The last one I got done for about $19.00. It's not too hard to get the parts department to lower their prices too. You just have to ask and be persistent and sometimes creative.

 

It all comes down to greed. If you don't buy it someone else will. Not everyone shops around on the Internet for best prices. Some people are anti-web and would rather pay more from local dealer. dealers suck

 

I could see that, but they all tell me they'd have to order the part, so it's not like it's sitting in stock...

 

I worked with city motors up in GF, and they were great, and i left feeling like i got a deal on the truck.

Remember people, you don't HAVE to buy from anyone. Make them earn your business. Shop around, shop in several states. Play them against each other.

 

Bottom line, I think you need to make friends with the parts people or parts manager.

It just baffles me... I want to support the local dealer, I want to give them my business and I'm a great customer. I am loyal and I spend a lot of money on cars.

But if there's $200 difference on a $400 part.. they are making it impossible.
