    Thanks!
I loved those days. My parents raised me that way. Hell, as long as I was in the yard, I stayed outside WAY passed sun down. I go stir crazy when I have been inside too long.... which isn't long at all.

The unfortunate part is, you all had a crap load of woods and land to just roam around on when you were kids. Development (around my area at least) has taken almost all of our woods and vacant property away. :( I am hoping by the time I am ready to settle down and have kids, I can find a decent amount of land so I can kick the kids out of the house for the day and let them entertain themselves.

Thanks for the invite:wave:. My younger years were spent outside, especially in the summer. Out all day from breakfast till whenever!! Those days you didn't have to worry about the crap you do today. Media has taken over and many kids don't want to do anything 'cept watch TV, play on their PS's, X boxes etc. Good thing about the TW site, even though there is a lot of younguns on here, they get out and do outdoor stuff!!! Hats off to all of them:yay:.... Ken

I agree, its good to see so many people enjoying the outdoors, the truck helps to get you out there.

I got my kid into the scouts many years ago to make sure he was part of the outdoors and high adventure and he has really taken to it, but it seems when the backpack and sleepingbag are hung up all he wants is the games. they are fun and have a degree of problem solving and help hand eye coordination but to just lay there for hours....

Here in Napa where i was raised we had all kinds of land to roam on there were all kinds of places to ride dirt bikes go hiking in the hills, some of the best salmon and steelhead fishing in the river that runs through town, but with the "whine" boom all that land became vineyards and the hills became filled with multi million dollar homes and most of the river is fenced off now.

Now all the city and county care about is the tourist dollar and not the new gen of kids growing up..pretty sad :(

The home I grew up in back in Itasca, Ill. had a strip of wild forest between it and our neighbor's property that the people who built the home left there for some reason. The rest of the forest which included wild elk and deer, was at the end of the road we lived on, and was pretty vast. There were a couple of lakes in there that we'd skate on when they froze up, and we had forts and a natural "treecave" that we cleared for ourselves under three evergreen trees in that forest patch in our yard. One drawback though was in the summer back in the 60s, the county would do a slow flyby in one chopper with a loud PA system on it announcing a warning that they were about to spray the trees with DDT (remember that stuff?) and to stay indoors for like 2-4 hours till it settled. We had a ton of ponds that bred swarms of mosquitoes there. They then sprayed, and they always concentrated on that forest patch next to us. Man that chopper flew so low-just above the treetops but it was cool to watch it through the window. ok memory off:)

Yeah it seems the only thing that matters now is the green paper.... really sucks. I have to drive 2+ hours just to get a forest to hike around in and enjoy without hearing traffic. :(
Wasn't DDT the stuff that was killing people left and right when it was sprayed?

Have any of you guys and gals drove by an area you used to hang out or live to see how much has changed? Is the place even there any more or did the land get developed?

It was killing the wildlife. It killed everything, it was overused. but effective.

I grew up in Los Angeles so the area is the same, just different types of people live there, no sense of community. I found a nice area 30 miles north in the foothills, we have block parties, parades and good neighbors.

I never heard of people dying from DDT and we're still here:) never saw any dead wildlife in the forest. One time I did see a bat laying on the road but when I poked it with a stick if shot off into the trees. Maybe rabies.

That would be a really nice piece of land. What would be great is to have a nice piece of property but be within 10 mins of your stores and major buildings. My aunt lives out on about 16 acre horse farm but you have to drive 20+ mins to get to the closest grocery store. Guess you gotta give something up though..
I couldn't possibly live in L.A. just because of the limited space and the majority of the people living there I couldn't see myself getting along with too well.
I was down there in February. I can see what you mean. Ever since Disney went in, the place turns in to a mad house and keeps growing until there is absolutely no room left. Just like any other major area like Myrtle Beach, Key West, Hilton Head, just to name a few.
I guess I am thinking of something different then. :anonymous:

Coming up a mountain road today, construction crew left a gate open and it swung into the road as I was going by at about 50. 324 buck to fix it and a 500 dollar deductable. looks like the OME stuff will have to wait.:annoyed:
