Desert Sand Mica spray paint

I am trying to find a rattle can paint that matches good, I bought a few cans of the Dupli-Color Perfect Match paint and.....it is not even close. I am trying to paint my Satoshi grill and was not stoked on the way it looks way to silver, not in the photo but in person. The paint on the grill was silver to begin with, so I was ok I will sacrifice a bad spot on my bumper to see what's up, it really looks silver sprayed over the factory paint. Any comments would be appriciated. Thanks.


I think the reflection of the hood onto the grill makes me look like a liar.


Here is how different it really is, yes I know my bumper looks like crap. Lol.

If I were you, id get a custom color mixed. There's not really any other option. It will cost a bit. Either that or upgrade to a new bumper

 

i had a large scratch on my tail gate and used that stuff and have a square just like that now on my tail gate. looks terrible. i put a magnet over it ha

 

Haha, that's pretty funny that you mentioned getting another bumper. It does look bad only in that area but unfortunately i'm trying to match my truck. I just threw my bumper under the bus to get the color comparison out to you all. Thanks for the comment though.

 

There is a couple different brands of paint out there, i'm hoping someone found one that is real close. I'm trying to steer clear of a paint shop with a modded grill.

 

I have heard that one of the reasons that DSM was dropped from the paint line-up was the fact that they had H**l trying to match the plastic painted parts with the metal parts. Even to this day stand back and look at any desert sand mica vehicle and you can subtly see the difference in the hue of the plastic parts compared to the metal parts. In this color that just stands out more than in other colors. The brightness and angle of the sun make a difference in how close the colors match. Good luck and please let us knwo what you end up with.

I had to wait two solid months to get my DSM Tacoma. It was worth it too. As a matter of fact the CEO of my company asked me yesterday how I liked my new truck. I told him that the truck is almost 4 years old now, it just looks new with no door dings whatsoever.

 

As it was mentioned before, you should go to a shop and have an aerosol can custom mixed for you, cost me about 60 a can for my DSM. I stood my quad up in my bed and the handle bars scratched through the roof paint down to the metal and had to cover it up before rust set in. Then I hit a pretty big dog and had to get a used front bumper which was red but had the same shop mix me a can and had a shop spray it. Looks perfect!

No DSM trucks around here, I'm always asked if I had it painted at a shop haha.

 

$60!!! that sounds like a deal to me! i have one scratch on meh DSM taco on the bumper that im not proud of. i've too searched for color-matched paint with no success.

I just had to leave my tailgate so the mixer could match it perfect, usually the keep the gas lid but I couldn't get mine off lol.

 

Where did you go to get the custom aerosol can. Would Sherwin Williams carry that

 

I have sprayed a vehicle with automotive paint with one of these. Just like using a rattle can.

I got mine at a local place called valley oxygen, didn't think about checking sherwin.

 

I know I'm a little late on this post, but I thought I could help out some DSM owners in the future. My wife backed into my tuck a while back and scratched up my fender flares. I bought some color match rattle can paint at English Paint. After some wet sanding and some prep work, I think it worked out well. Here are some before and after pics...

 

That looks AMAZING! What did you use for the prep work? How many base coats did you put and did you also need use clear coat? (A specific brand name would be appreciated considering that I have the same exact issue.)

 

Thanks! I really suprised myself with how it came out.

After I cleaned the surface, I wet sanded it with 2000 grit to get out all the groves from the fender. I tapped and covered the the quarter panel, hood and the tire. The only part exposed was the fender flare. I sprayed three coats of dupli-color adhesion promoter in a sweeping motion. After that, I hit it with three or four coats of DSM spray paint that I bought at english paint for $25 a can. After that dried I sprayed three coats of dupli-color clear coat. I let it dry and it baked in the sun for a few hours. Later on that day I used polishing compound the smooth it out and then I waxed it.

Of Course that was helpful! I'm planning on doing my satoshi as well as fix some other scrapes so I definitely needed the info. But how did you get the scratches to blend back in with the truck. Did you sand down just the flare or only a small amount of surface area around the scratch ( Sorry I'm kinda new to this )

 

I wet sanded a large part of the flare around the scratches, because I wanted it to be as even as possible. I smoothed them out to where they felt smooth to the touch. I wasnt sure if I could use filler primer on plastic, so I sanded it and figured that the promoter and paint would fill in what was left. If you look at the flare at a certain angle you can see how the clear doesnt match and I'm ok with that. At our last meet several members couldnt tell wich one it was until I told them. Now, I want to paint them or bed liner them black....
