I don't know. I think it would be complete shit if somebody is getting a full ride to a good school and is making some cash for playing their sport, while the students have to pay for the same education. Maybe I just see this differently because I'm sitting in student loans. And how do you explain to the womens crew team that they won't be making as much as a football player? I think title 9 would have a say in this because your not giving the womens crew team an equal opportunity

They should be sanctioned just for this.

I've had my share of student loans. I had the HOPE scholarship, so I didn't have to pay as much, but I know what you're talking about. In the "real world" you get ahead when you can and you use your resources. Aren't you supposed to be learning how to do that in college (Not YOU personally, just a generalization)? Like I said, don't let the school pay them, but if others are willing to do it, why punish the athlete by not letting them capitalize on their celebrity. Yea, it sucks for the rest of the student body, but it sucks for me that Will Ferrell makes millions of dollars to make funny movies while I have to go to a 9-5 job every day just to get by.

You get rid of the "amateur" status once you start paying these kids. Then you basically have minor league football

this discussion about Miami reminds me of the old adage moms always say

"if everyone else jumped off a cliff, would you?"

I dont care if every major school is doing it...it's against the rules and its widely known that its against the rules

maybe this occurred because of people just "accepting" that it happens...maybe it occurred due to too many people turning a blind eye...or these piddly little sanctions that the NCAA has imposed over the years

I think the free education is payment enough...period...celebrity or not

I think bringing the pain and hammer to Miami would do the NCAA some good...and hopefully put the fear into other schools and boosters to knock off some of this crap

He's in jail for his ponzi scheme, and he's telling all b/c he feels that he was abandoned by people (players, coaches) that he considered 'family.' He reached out to them once he got in trouble and they turned their backs. Whether or not that makes him more credible doesn't matter with all of the corroboration noted in the article.

This is the big point... It's not what the kids did that will get Thug U shut down for a year, it's the fact that multiple people within the program knew (or should have known) and it went on for years.

This is why the NCAA should seriously consider the death penalty. If you don't bring the hammer when stuff this serious happens, there's not enough fear of getting caught. They have to set an example, and if much of what was said is proven to be true, ESPECIALLY how much was allegedly known by Miami coaches/etc., I think they will get the death penalty.

My opinion on the whole thing... Yes, things happen at many schools, but I think it's a huge stretch to think that things this bad are going on all over. Regardless, it doesn't make it right, and punishing the current players/coaches/university is the only action that the NCAA can take. If they don't take serious action, they're a joke.

Paying players is a nice idea, but the reality is that you can't pay football players and not pay baseball players and basketball players and swimmers and gymnasts. There are few schools that can afford to pay football players, and fewer still (maybe only a handful) that can pay everybody else. I know (and agree with) the argument that football brings in the big bucks at most schools, so they 'deserve' to get paid... forget the others. The problem: things like Title IX, and the fact that I guarantee lawsuits would be filed on behalf of the athletes who aren't getting paid. I just don't see how it will work.

Two of the seven coaches named in the article currently work on the Alabama staff. I haven't seen anything about how they're handling it, but I hope they do something quickly. We don't need that shit.

Got this from a Yahoo! article

Guys wanted to party on a yacht. Guys wanted to drink free in a VIP section of a nightclub. Guys wanted some cash, or a mansion to hang out in, or some extra money for a big hit, or maybe even the wildest of parties.
It’s not abnormal behavior from 20-year-olds.
Except in the mind of the NCAA, which is so far backward, it’s wasting time arguing over whether offering players a minor monthly stipend will cut too far into the adults’ gravy train.

Here's my problem: If they weren't athletes, they could go do this with no problems, if they have the right connections. But since they play football for the school, they can't. I've never been one to go out and get wild and party, but if these kids wanted to do that, who cares? It has nothing to do with the school.

If it was the school paying the athletes, I could see the problem. This guy might have been a booster, but he wasn't using the school's money to do it. He was using his money (I believe...correct me if I'm wrong), and that, I don't have a problem with.

They're having a "round table" on ESPN with coaches and "analysts" and they basically all agree that student athletes should be given a "cost of attendance" stipend. These kids can't have jobs (during the season, at least) because they don't have time. What are they supposed to do about money? Some dude offers em some cash, they take it. I don't see the big deal. (I know it's against the rules...I'm just sayin it shouldn't be.)

^^^ Yeah, any other student at the school could have taken most of those things (excluding the prostitutes) w/o a problem. The issue is that if things like this are allowed, the schools with the rich alumni will be given a competitive advantage over those without. It's not about the kids taking money, it's about keeping a level playing field (or, at least the appearance of one).

I've seen the coaches and analysis on that ESPN show, and I agree with most of what they say. I'm also really glad to see Saban on there. I still think it won't happen b/c most schools can't afford it, and if you pay football players, you'll have to pay everybody, and almost NOBODY can afford that.

Perfect world, though... Yes, the kids would get a little piece of the pie.

EDIT: Just read the last part of that quote... If you're an athlete and getting $300/month stipend or something like that, will you turn down a trip on a yacht or a free night at a strip club? I don't know how deep a cut into things like this a stipend will make.

I know it sounds like I don't care that this stuff goes on. They're breaking the rules, they deserved to be punished. I just don't like the rule. At all. And I don't like the fact that the current kids are being punished for what the previous players did.

That being said; The NFL said Terrelle Pryor is eligible for the supplemental draft. HOWEVER...he has to sit out the first 5 games of the season...just like if he were at tOSU.

The league informed clubs that Pryor ''made decisions that undermine the integrity of the eligibility rules for the NFL draft.'' Among those, the league said, was his failure to cooperate with the NCAA and hiring of an agent in violation of NCAA rules.
Pryor may not practice or play until Week 6 of the regular season.

This kind of punishment I can handle. It's the punishment that doesn't affect the person that broke the rules that I don't like.

This is what they're talking about in the "round table discussion" for cost of attendance. Maybe this will take off and make it to the powers that be...

    Pay for Play:
Cronan: “And I am very much for cost of attendance. But I think we have to tweak it a little bit because we’re all looking for a level playing field. If a cost of attendance of Tennessee is $4000, and cost of attendance at X University is $6000, putting $6000 dollars in a kid’s hand versus $4000 means a lot when you're 18 to 22. So, I think we have to look at tweaking a little bit, but I think that’s a great place to start.”

Ugh! Where's the "silver britches"? I don't like it is an understatement but at least keep with the tradition and give us our silver britches!

The helmet is the best looking part of it but the color red is all wrong, particularly on the helmet. Looks almost orange on the helmet. But I don't really care that much, I'm just ready for some Bulldogs football! Go Dawgs!

As long as they beat Boise I don't care what they wear. My girlfriend's brother goes to UGA and he might have me a couple student tickets. $25 each. Hopefully I'll get to be at the Dome!

Sounds good, hopefully you'll get in. I know they started cracking down on the student ticket thing in Athens, plus I'm too old to pass off as a student anyway. ;) But hope it works for you! And raise some hell for me. :D
