LOL! I knew a girl like that in college. The power was out one day and she was giving me a ride in her car (which had power windows) and said dont even bother to try to put the windows down, the power is out, they won't work! AHAHAHAHAHHHA

Yeah i live down a dead end street - nice neighborhood, low crime rate etc.

About once every year, usually July/August every unlocked car parked outside gets 'tossed' - I learned my lesson the first year we moved in, lost a back pack with a macbook pro, iphone, checks, and some other stuff. never again. lock my car every time i get out of it now and never leave anything in it overnight. I got my laptop back since i reported teh serial number at 6am, a 19 year old girl was pulled over a few miles away with a STACK of laptops in the back seat. mine was the only one reported missing with s/n. Officer stated if i hadnt' reported mine, they wouldn't have been able to arrest her/confiscate the stolen goods and get the stuff back to their owners.

Just last week was their yearly tossing. A few neighbors lost phones/purses/wallets, I had my doors locked - no loss. They bought some gas on a neighbors CC early in the morning, so the neighbor went to the gas station, got a copy the surveillance video of the vehicle they used and the kids swiping the card so the cops tracked them down and arrested them. Good times. Stupid asshats.

Cops seemed unshaken, "this is the new 'job' for alot of people" they mentioned.

    both.

what are the fucking odds that the ONE night out of the last 3 years that I leave my doors unlocked someone jacks my shit?!

Normally before we go to bed every night I make sure both cars are locked...fuck me. at least it wasnt nice stuff really. the ipod was an older one from 06, still sucks cause I lost a lot of music that I have no way of replacing, the gps was pretty much replaced by my iphone, and the dvd player was like 70 bucks but it was my kids and thats what bothers me.

I guess it would cost around 540 to replace everything.

My truck got broke into twice while i was in College. First time i came outside in the pouring rain to find out my drivers side window was shattered and my entire dash had been ripped/demolished and my dvd/cd player was ripped out.

Next time i heard the window bust at about 2:30 in the morning and tried to chase after the guy but couldn't get a make of him.. I would have loved to be sitting right behind someone trying to do something like this.

First time the insurance paid because it was over $500 deductable, the second time i had to pay $130 because it wasn't over $500 in damage. Goodluck and hope you catch them.

that sucks man. I've done it too though.

If TX is anything like CA, your auto insurance will not cover personal property inside the car. Your home owners or renters insurance will, minus the deductible.

Edit-- if the DVD player was permanently attached, then your auto might cover that

My father taught me at a very early age that if you can't take care of something, you don't deserve to have it. This includes making sure that your valuable are safe. Everytime I leave my Tacoma, I make sure everything is either going into the house with me, or out of sight. No exceptions. I understand that cars get broken into, meaning they were secure, i.e windows up, doors locked, but if you don't give somebody a reason to break in, they won't!!

I've had my 4runner broken into when I left the door unlocked, just as the OP did. They only got a pair of headphones and didn't find my iPod in the top compartment in my center console. This was the first time I had left the door open, it is ridiculous. Also my girlfriends Jeep got broken into when the door was left unlocked at 8:30 am. They stole a GPS and my new sweatshirt. The crazy part was they broke into the Jeep between 8:30 am and 1 pm. Kind of ballsy of the person.

    Thanks dad!

No, just kidding, I do the same. More than just security I hate having anything left in the car, anal about it, but I just like it to be clean.

WT i hear exactly what you're saying - we used to live in downtown Mpls. for 4 or so odd years - obviously locked the cars all the time and never were broken into - didn't leave anything in there. Moved out to the burbs (bought the inlaws house), everyone was lax, we got lazy. At least all the expensive stuff in my bag was from Work so i wasn't out more than the cost of a bag and the inconvenience of the other stuff.

It does always seem it's "The one time I..." doesn't it? I rarely left my bag in the car and that one night i did i was too lazy and complacent to lock up.

The 1 time I left mine unlocked, they stole my head unit, radar detector, and spare keys to my moms car. As the cop was there taking his report, 2 other neighbors came up and told the cop their car was robbed too. All of our cars were unlocked
