How extensive can you mod a standard reg 1st gen?

I haven't really been able to find much on people modding their 1st gen standard regular Tacoma.

How extensive can one modify it?

being on a 2wd platform with a 2RZ-FE 2.4 engine. it's obviously not meant for extreme off road. What's an ideal setup or approach one should take when dipping his toes into off road trucking? moderate off road.

Regular/Standard cab
2.4 2RZ-FE 2WD
5-Lug

I've replaced oem shocks with Bilstein shocks. replaced alternator with 140 amp and electric fan. I keep clutch fan in truck as spare.

 

for mild offroad get some bilstein 5100s and some meatier tires and probably wanna re gear it after the bigger tires

 

was looking at toytec ultimate package since it comes with the 5100s shocks.

first thing on my to get list is wheels, set those aside than suspension work as well as frame strengthening. Than I would want to regear and possibly add a locker..? Figured I'd link the package incase someone else searches and pulls this up

I know with money you can do anything

but lets keep this somewhat on an "off road standard"

I do everything myself mechanically and I enjoy doing so. I don't want the bare minimal, quality and good track record is what I am after.

I got this truck cause I got tired of being pulled over and speeding tickets. I used to be a go fast honda/datsun/nissan type of guy


I did have an old 85 cressida with a 7m turbo swap.

Put a locker in the rear and that would be a sweet little rig.

 

lame. I can always do a 6lug conversion IF i can come across one at the junk yard....

 

never heard of that before....

 

too expensive and I want to retain the OEM look somewhat. I can roll and flare my own fenders for clearance. Total chaos quoted me on their kit... I don't think I would do anything extreme enough to utilize the full function of a long travel kit...


however I am open to opinions

 

That is good - this place has a lot of them. From an off road view point - get some good tires, a locker in the rear, and some sliders. The rest will let you know to replace it when it breaks/falls off.

 

Hah. I know forums pretty well. Took me an some time before I actually made a thread. It's difficult finding information for 5-lug and standard. I heard something about standard tacoma trucks has very weak frames.

This thread just confirmed most of what I am looking for. information wise.
