Fixed wing pilot here. Fly an astra jet/ G-100 right now. Started in 99. Got all my ratings/cert by spring 2001 and instructed for 1.5 years. Then did charter in barons, king air 90s and king air 200s. Logged a little more than 2000 hrs in the king airs then moved to the astra. Been flying it for almost 2 years.

Been a tough road but couldn't have done it without the help of my wife. We are finally in a position where she can stay at home. Can't see myself doing anything else. If you really want to do it then go for it!

You just stopped straight up after you retired? Any particular reason or is it just a time/money thing to do it recreationally?

The costs to fly in the civilian world ... what you flew in the military ... would be astronomical ... :D

So many just quit flying or go back to small fixed wing aircraft (i.e. 172) I flew some rotary wing after I got out, but they were much smaller and cheaper aircraft ... until my meds caused me to stop.

FWIW ... I remember when you could rent a 172 in a flying club for $20.00 per hour, and that was wet (with fuel).

Just got tired of it all, was flying constantly since i was 14. Missed most of my Younger days , but I enjoyed being based in Miami Just never enough women ;) . Being a airline Pilot was not even close to what i had hoped it to be, felt nothing more than a Bus driver and quite frankly treated like shit by the Upper Managment. Aircraft Maintaince was very lackluster to say the least. All of this came to a head at the 5yr mark. The chance came along to Make a change and start a new career and Live again. Funny thing don't miss it at all. If I started 20 years before I may have enjoyed it more as Many of my Older Retired EASTERN airline Friends had some of the best stories I ever heard.

I have a bunch of friends who were commercial airline pilots and they have some good stories from the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s when flying was a lot of fun and the pay was better ... :D

I used to teach some of them rotary and they had great stories and super parties too ... especially at Halloween :D & News Years. :D

The weird part is two of them that were highly experienced Delta pilots and both died in small aircraft crashes after they retired.

One in a helicoper crash in the jungles of Brazil and other one in a small fixed wing in Forsyth County Georgia.

Just getting ready for my second to last prog check in part 141 to get my PPL.

I was hoping to follow in my dads footsteps and get in with the Air Force, however odds are not looking good with all this downsizing and lack of boards...... May try with the guard here in PHX with the KC-135 or tucson f-16.... Time will tell i suppose.

I went to ERAU Daytona in 00, the tuition and flying was ridicously expensive and at the time I thought what if the Airline industry sucks in a few yrs? So I decided having a 4 yr degree in flying a plane wasn't that great of an idea. So I decided not to return in July. Then 9/11 happened and the industry has been down since then.

I finished up my commercial while I attended another 4 yr state school. I saw how the instructors were living and what regional jobs they were getting once they his x hrs. That didn't look too great either. I could mow lawns for more $ than that. So I applied to all the services to fly when I graduated and got accepted by the USMC. Went to OCS and broke my legs, got released, then a local reserve unit called to fly C130's. Went off to fly for them, but developed a med condition and couldn't get a waiver so I seperated. I took my fiance up in a 172 right before I left for AF OTS and haven't touched a plance since I got out. I still wish I could be doing it, but seeing my friends in the regionals and majors, I dont think I'm missing much. I would love to fly helos, or something for the Govt but it would be a long shot.

You yoke actuators work entirely too hard. Flight Engineer is where it's at:

    -best seat in the plane
    -I control the air conditioning
-treat copilots like the dumb***es they are
-have three officers fly me to exotic drinking locations

    :D
