gas, 92 octane?

hi all,

i just got a 08 prerunner 2 X 4 taco, in the owners manual says that the recomended gasoline is with 92 octanes, so i was wondering if anyone knew what happens if i use 87 octanes gas? since is less expensive, or what happens if i mix gasoline, half and half ?

The computer in your truck will retard the timing for you if you run 87 octane. The truck will be fine, and run well. The only real benefit to running the 92 octane is a little more umph. I believe that the higher octane shows a 5 Hp and 5lb. ft. increase. If you know in advance you are going to be hauling or towing something, then fill up with 92. If you are just doing regular driving use 87.

 

I can tell you this: Last week I had an odd tapping/thumping sound. It was "deiseling" or, in other words, running like crap because of the 87 octane I've used recently. I put in a full tank of 93 and no more noise. Maybe a coincidence but I doubt it.

 

i noticed a really big difference from when i was running 87, and ive been running mid and premium for a while.

 

I do mostly around town driving and 4 wheeling, so I run 91 to keep the motor running smooth, but If I am driving on a longer trip I'll drop down to 89 just because freeway miles are so much easier on the motor.

 

Did they alter some thing with the engines? My 05 manual recommends 87 octane. I have the 4.0 v6.

 

In traffic crawl, I can't tell any difference, so regular gas and synthetic oil every 15k miles will do fine for now. When I retire in 20 years, I look forward to living anywhere with hills that it isn't so congested!!

 

My 08 mentions nothing about using 93 octane. Manual says 87.

I've been running 87 since I bought it (8 months ago). I only do trips to work & store - nothing major to warrant running the more expensive gas. If I were gonna tow or haul - I'd probably run mid grade.

 

Why wait 20 yrs ? How bad would it be if your time expired while in crawl, never getting your chance for the hills ? Live well friend ! Now back to the subject at hand, I have an 06, V-6 and I run 87 all summer long, no problems, no knocking, but come winter , every third tank I run high test for the cleaning property's, and yes there is an improvement in performance and the engine runs much smoother. Oh yeah nice rig, Drive on.

 

I recomend taking the middle ground. I run 89 and have no problems at all

 

I used 87 for the past 2 years and recently started using 89. I'm on my 4th tank and getting between 10 to 15% more KM's per tank now than with the 87. Plus it is definitely running stronger. I'm thinking of testing 91 for a few tanks. With the extra KM's I'm getting per tank it off sets the additional cost of the fuel.

 

Hmmm... My 08 manual clearly says 87... I run nothing higher than the manual recommends. Unless I'm towing something.

 

I was getting 410 KM's out of a tank with 87 with city driving.....now with 89 I'm getting 450 to 460 KM's out of a tank. Funny, I know the manual states 87 but a lot of the dealships recommend 89-91. I know I'm sticking with 89 or higher now.

 

1mpg is all you need to break even at 15 cents per gal difference
87 gas at $3.00 and 18mpg / 21 gal tank = 16.66 cents per mile
89 gas at $3.15 and 19mpg / 21 gal tank = 16.57 cents per mile

Mine runs a little stronger on the 89 gas too

Been running 91 since I bought it, with 6.7K on the OD. Going on a trip this weekend, I just may use 89 for the road, probably won't notice the difference.

 

i can tell a difference between 87 and 89 but i cant tell any difference between 89 and 91+. i think our engines (V6) is most efficient at 89 octane. the higher octanes require higher compression ratios to get all the available energy from the gas. If your engine isn't built for higher compression then your just wasting the potention energy in the higher octane gas

 

Only had my truck for 3 weeks and fill it twice with 87 with no problems.

 

i'm going to be sticking with the 89 for awhile until i have a huge road trip to do, like the Alliance meet in the spring. hey ndcouch can you give me an address somewhere by where we're meeting so i can calculate my driving distance?
