Brake alarm issue

OK - here's the deal - driving home from Missouri yesterday (11/21) - minding my own business - enjoying my NEW 2008 Tacoma (less than 2K miles) and.....the brake light comes on and starts beeping at me. So I stop immediately - parking brake is definitely off, brakes seem to work fine, so I continue about 2 miles to the next exit where luckily there is a Toyota dealership about 1/2 mile away. Go there. Long story short - they don't know what the %*&#!! the problem is. They THINK it's something to do with the anti-lock brake actuator, but aren't sure. the codes (DTC : C1271 - C1278 - can't find much on the web 'bout this) from the computer are making no sense - it's saying the parking brake is on when it's not, it's saying the brake fluid is low - it's not, etc. The brakes will work (sans anti-lock), so after 3+ hours (now it's pouring rain, traffic sux) I drive on home to Atlanta with my truck beeping the entire way. (they didn't want to clear the 'puter - so the next dealership could see what was up) I'm planning to be at my dealership first thing in the AM, but I'm not real happy right now.

Just wondering if anyone had heard of this problem before (it was brand new to the folks at this dealership in Manchester, TN)

It's good that you had the ability to get to a Toyota dealer....good to hear you got home safely.

It could be anything....Take it to your local dealer and let them figure it out.

It might take a while and many trips to the dealership - but that's your RIGHT as an owner under warrantee to get it fixed. If a good amount of time goes by and the dealership still can't figure it out - I'd start researching and/or pushing for them to give you another truck.

I had a Dodge Ram with 10k or so miles on it. The "Service 4WD" light came on and wouldn't allow me to engage 4WD. You could get rid of the light by shutting the truck off and starting it again, but it would eventually come back on again. It was October..... 6 or 7 trips to the dealership and about 3 replaced parts later - the light still came on. Finally....in early December - they suspected a wiring problem. They tore apart my entire dash and found a loose wire within a connector somewhere deep behind the dash. Took them 4 days to rip everything apart and find it.

Obviously, your truck is bran new and what you're experiencing is probably some sort of installation/factory boo-boo. It might take them a while to find it.

 

According to my local dealer the problem is in the parking brake switch - not sure what that is, but they had to order the part - will be here Tuesday. Until then I have to endure the beeping.

 

..and hope that fixes it. If not - keep going back to the dealer!

 

It WAS the parking brake switch - took 'bout 30 min to install the new one...and NO MORE BEEPING! Hoping this was just a fluke - searching ALL of the forums never turned this problem up anywhere else....so fingers crossed.

 

That sux. Did they say what happened with the original one?

 

They weren't sure - thought it was probably a bad switch from the factory. Neither dealership I went to had ever seen this problem before. I hoping it was just a fluke and I can get back to enjoying my Tacoma again!

 

yea man i have been at a dealer for about 3years i have never seen or heard of a bad brake switch but good to know that your dealer found something and got it fixed for you

 

Check tone wheels on hubs and speeds sensor on front. Could also be fautly Pick up on rear axle
