Little did they know at the time - that was (and could be) the beginning of the end of PRINTED newspapers. They're digging themselves a hole to jump in it.

My mom worked for United Technologies in the 80's and we had a computer at home so she could dial into their network in the evenings and on weekends. I used to play games on it through the modem and thought I was really high tech. I guess I was, for the time.

That vid brings back lots of cool memories.

I'm kind of old fashioned. I still walk out to the mailbox every morning to get a newspaper, read it with my breakfast, and do the crossword with my coffee. I hope the newspapers never give up.

 

My dad's about your age, and he does the same thing. He said that he likes the feel of the paper, etc.

He got me a subscription to the B'ham news one year for Christmas in the hopes I would follow in his footsteps. I found that I only really read the sports section on Sundays during football season. Otherwise I got my news from AL.com, which has all of the same stories. I cancelled the subscription b/c the only time I read it was when I felt guilty, and it mostly ended up in the recycling bin. He just said, "It's a new world."

 

It is a new world. I'll go online for local news once in a while. They let you comment on it which is a nice feature. You can read what other people are thinking. But I still want a real paper on the table in the morning.

 

Its kind of interesting seeing this. I'm only 31, but when I was growing up I had to type all my research papers on a typewriter that had (gasp) flying erase! My uncle, who is a dairy farmer had an Apple computer. It was hooked up to a Zenith TV set. He used it to store information about all his cows and their medical needs, records, etc. It had a few games on it that we would play.

We didn't get a computer until probably around 1995. I didn't go online until my first year of college in 96'. Back then the "internet" was basically lists of directories. There wasn't much there.

Now I work in tech out here in Silicon Valley. If only I could go back in time and invest in all that "wacky" technology, I'd be loaded right now.
