    Hi,

I've been lurking around for a while and just decided to join. I have a 2001 3.4L v6 Prerunner sr5, and for a while i've been wanting to supercharge it. I have a air induction on it right now, which sounds great from the interior. My only concern super charging it is the noise in the interior, alot of people say it can make a whiny sound, or screeching.

Also what can you realistically expect from supercharging it? I'm sitting at 200hp or so.

Welcome to TW!!! Never heard of "Air Induction" as a mod before....care to elaborate?

Alright...BIG difference between an Air induction unit, and a "Cold" air intake. If your running a K&N on your 3.4, odds are, you lost power...

How the hell would you lose power? Unless you have to run a by-pass to trick the MAF or you get oil on the MAF sensor... I fail see how a larger surface area of air intake can make you actually run slower? That makes zero sense... at all.

All the dyno runs Ive seen on the 3.4 with a K&N intake have had less HP than the OEM air box. Intake surface area :)confused:) Are you talking about the air filter?

Search :p. CAI does nothing for first gens. Only a deckplate.

AS for the SC sound, its not that obtrusive. Yes, you can hear it. Stock HP is around 150 to the tires (about 155 in your area), and you can expect the SC to bump that to between 190 to 220 depending on the fuel mods, and exhaust/headers combo you run.

I almost bought a K&N CIA from craigslist for $150, but i did some research on this site and decided against it. The deckplate costed me $17 and i will be happy with it I guess.

As far as supercharging your Tacoma OP i would do it if i had the money. The whine of a supercharger is music to my ears. I guess your MPG would go down and the engine would wear down sooner. Anyone correct me if am wrong on this.

Uh, yea surface area... I've never seen a stock drop in with a larger surface area than a cone type installed on CAI's are...

There's only two ways I can see a CAI having a power decrease...
    1) The A/F tune is way out of wack
    2) It's not a real "CAI" and is pulling in hot air, thus less dense and nullifying what should be a gain from a larger surface area and easier to breath filter.

I suppose I can see that being the case on the 3.4... the only experience I've had is with Alex's SC one so... dunno what else to say. All the deckplate mod is allow more air flow to the stock air filter location... which a true CAI setup should be doing the same anyway. Granted, there's the obvious advantage of being able to close the deckplate for water crossings but that's not part of this discussion :)

You shouldnt have any more wear than normal, unless your running much over 8 psi boost. Even then, lots of folks running 10 psi on stock parts. the engine is built pretty strong. MPG hit will depend on how often youre in the boost. I lost about 1.5 mpg (average) when I was SC'd on my first gen, and after about 90k miles, there was no measurable wear on the top end.

The K&N intake pulls the air from under the hood, and is much hotter than when pulled from the OEM set up, thus the loss. The Deck plate allows for air to come in from the front of the truck (high pressure area), and is ambient temp., so you do get a gain. I havent seen a decent intake for the first gens that give any gains, other than the deck plate. FWIW, The larger surface area of the air filter is irelevant. The cu/in of media is more than enough to be virtually invisible to the engine. Dyno runs with the air filter in place, and completely removed, have only shown a gain of about 1 hp (within the margin of error on the dyno). The "restriction" in the intake tract is the air box, and throttlebody.
