I'm not much of a gun guy. I live on about 3 acres, and my next door neighbor lives about 300 feet away. Every evening lately, he goes into his yard and shoots for a couple of hours, starting at about supper time. I don't have a problem with guns at all, but I'm getting annoyed with the excessive noise. I understand he is within his rights, but still, it's upsetting when I'm on my deck grilling and all I here is shots coming from pretty close by. Just looking for opinions on how I should deal with it. Should I ignore it or let him know he is bothering my family and I?

Is it really legal to shoot in a residential area like that?

You need to be civil with neighbors. If the talk doesnt work, THEN you burn him with fire!

I'd start by asking him to possibly be more mindful of you during his shooting sessions

If that doesn't work, then by all means start calling the police when he starts

purchase an electric guitar and large amp. pretend to be jimi hendrix at 4am

talk to him, ask why he does it and if he would mind keeping it to a minimum. do you have other neighbors that are equally annoyed by this? get them on your side and approach him as a group. is there someplace nearby that he could go to to shoot safely and without disturbing anyone??

He does it because it's free, and going to shooting range would cost money.

My wife spoke to the State Police and they told her he was legal before dark.
I will have a talk with him next time he starts, but my gut feeling is he will not be cooperative. The State Police would not even come out when my wife called. I live in a rural town with no local police force.
    I hope so too, Judy.
I was here first, he does not own the home, his girlfriend does.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Go talk to him, sounds like it's your only choice at this point... I don't know how expensive they are but maybe get a sound meter. He may be far enough away from your house to be shooting but may be exceeding noise ordinances. It's a reach but if he's not reasonable when you talk to him, it might be your last resort.

Not sure how mountainous the area is and what echoes you get.

You might talk to him about putting up a berm as a sound barrier where he shoots so that his girlfriend(and you) are not bothered by the noise.

Or, if this is a boyfriend, let it run its course, it might solve itself and he goes away. Don't make it into a major fight it will only drive them closer with a shared enemy and it will last longer.
