Is LSD always on?

I have a 2010 Prerunner TRD Sport.

I know when I just press my traction control button it comes up with the red "auto LSD" light ( as well as the traction light ( yellow ) ).

My question is. Is the LSD on all the time. Or only if I press that button once.

I do know that if I hold down the traction button it turns off the LSD.



I would have rather had an Off Road 4x4.. but I needed the long bed, so that put the OR out the window, and I was given the truck from parents and grandparents, so I couldn't really go back and say I also wanted 4x4. I was so amazed to be getting any thing at all.

My dad and I take the truck out to the desert to ride, and we go through some somewhat sandy parts here and there, so i'd like to always have the LSD on out there. I really air down also. ( Love the bed outlet, cuz I can power my 5 gallon compressor from it so easily and air up and down in a few min )

 

so in normal mode: if your tires start to spin, it cuts your throttle.

in Auto LSD ( quick press ): if your tires start to spin, it uses braking to transfer power to tire with traction.

with it all off: if your tire starts to spin, it just keeps spinning....


** So in theory, off road it should be best to have the auto LSD on. Correct?

Again, I don't really do trails, just out in the flat desert. But if I hit a sandy patch I want to be able to get over it.

I was just thinking today, I would rather figure this out when i'm sitting by my computer than when I'm stuck in sand cuz I didn't know what I was doing haha....

 

Good job Christian, but I will say the wheel spin in sand is a no-no! I think the OP knows that sand driving requires deflating tires to not get stuck, or to get unstuck if you didn't deflate first!

Snow and mud seems to be the place they designed the VSC OFF mode for... to allow spinning to grab fresh bites or to dig down to hard ground.

 

Hey guys
It seems that the ATRAC system in my truck used to be on all the time but now the dash indicators are never illuminated. I have tried to turn it back on but it seems to shut off on its own or not come back on after the truck is turned off and restarted.

Am I missing something or is there something wrong with my traction control system? For the first few months I had the truck the system was always working and I would feel the brakes engage or the throttle cut on a slippery road or if the tires spun.

any ideas?

 

Your Truck ID says only SR5... are you also an Off Road TRD (all Off Roads are SR5s, but but not all SR5s are Off Roads)?

The A-TRAC works only in L4 on 2009+ Off Road 4WD Tacomas, once the A-TRAC button is pushed. A-TRAC is a crawler drive that is the closest to having front and rear lockers engaged that you can have from the factory.

TRAC is the automatic limited slip that works in H2 and H4 whenever one of the drive tires loses traction... it doesn't need anything to activate. You can prevent it from coming on if you desire wheel spin by holding down the VSC OFF switch a few seconds, while STOPPED.

AUTO LSD is an enhanced limited slip in H2 (only), and is activated by a quick push of the VSC OFF switch (moving or stopped)... use to get unstuck in 2WD (4WD is a better way to keep from getting stuck).

If you are still unsure about if your questions have to do with A-TRAC (L4) or TRAC & AUTO LSD... just ask!

 

PART 2)

2WD:





Push the VSC OFF button quickly for AUTO LSD (TRAC without any engine output regulation/ brakes only) for best 2WD traction.



IF you don't want any traction help, hold down the VSC OFF button until this light comes on:

4WD HIGH:





TRAC without regulation is on with H4. Hold down VSC button for a few seconds while stopped to turn off TRAC.


4WD LOW:





L4 is open differential only (no traction control), unless you have an OFF ROAD TRD!






Last Resort... if A-TRAC is unable to get you through (this I've got to see), then you have the rear locking differential!








The Off Road TRD 4WD... purely unstoppable, from the factory!
