Owned my '08 TRD 4x4 AC V6 just over a year. Mileage is 22k. Will exceed 36k this year. Majority of mileage is street. Few thousand in the desert, occasional 4x4. No mods which affect the performance/suspension. Only significant upgrades are 1. rear leaf TSB 2. BFG AT 3. leer camp. shell.

Recommend extended warranty or am I wasting my money? Would prefer not to use disposable income on major repairs.

Any recommendations/suggestions. Do I gamble in favor of the Toyota reputation?
FYI: I'm pretty good at staying on top of recommended maintenance. Also, I treat my Tacoma with TLC - parked or driving.

Take the gamble on Toyota's reputation. I bought one on my last truck and it was a waste.

I used to by extended warranties. I have never made a claim on any ext warranty for any Honda or Toyota I've ever owned (I'm on my 2nd Tacoma)... The warranties paid for themselves over and over again on the american made vehicles I've owned...

    Just my two cents.

    From Consumer Reports:

Extended warranties sell costly "peace of mind" for repair nightmares that probably won't occur, according to a survey of more than 8,000 readers in December 2007 by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. We have long advised that extended warranties are a poor deal for almost every product. Now we have the first data showing that this advice applies to most new cars as well.

The main reason is that automobiles today are more reliable than ever. The odds are that what's covered won't fail.

Rear spring TSB, OEM tube steps, in-channel wind deflector, OEM front seat covers,5100's up front set at 1.75"

I was quoted $870 today by Troy for the 7yr/100k platinum Toyota warranty on my 06 DC prerunner. I had the rear spring TSB done yesterday and after seeing what the parts would have cost I knew right then it was peace of mind for me. If springs cost that much it is no telling what one other little part would cost. I have 4k miles left on my regular warranty and will be calling Troy back tomorrow morning to get the platinum package. I hope I never need it, but knowing I will not have to pay for any major repairs or towing for the next 4-1/2 years or 68K miles is worth $870 to me.

The gold package was $715. He did mention these prices were for the 4x2's.

Wow! Quick replies. THANK YOU! My previous truck was a '01 Dodge Dakota 4x4. I purchased the factory extended when I bought the truck. Paid for itself at 60k when the front rack and pinion went out. Glad I had the extended warranty!
Unless someone can convince me otherwise I'm leaning towards an extended warranty. It's not cheap but I'll rest easy - same as health insurance.
I intend to keep the truck 10yrs plus.

Thanks for the lead ref. warranty purchase. Anybody suggest additional factory warranty leads or links?
    Again, thanks for the comments.
