Wow. That website can be harsh but true at the same time...I know several people that fall into this category. I mean I'm no professional and I know this, yes I have a website but it's for sports and the parents sake so they can buy pictures of their kids, cause I know when I played we never had anyone there taking pictures.

    I agree

The photographer that did my step-sister's wedding, didn't do that great of a job. Some of her shots weren't really composed well and didn't really deliver. (ie some Black and White photos were really blown out)

Digital cameras are cheap and produce good quality pictures with regard to focus & exposure. So many people buy a camera, set up a web site and call themselves photographers but (like the site says); just because you have a camera...

Look through the photo forums for threads that start out "shooting my first wedding..." or similar title. It's crazy the number who are shooting solo and not as say a second shooter. If they post their take, it looks like shit--full of exposure and composition mistakes. You can't really blame someone who's hired that person except to say if you shop on price alone, don't be surprised to get what you payed for.

On the flip side, there are a lot of folks without formal training who've blown the wedding segment away with their style and coverage. They command very high prices and produce a quality you'd be proud to leave on the living room table.

Ohh man, that's one of my number one pet peeves. There are a TON of pro photog wanabes here in Alaska. I am so amazed at how shitty the quality of the pictures are yet they keep getting hired for concerts/events/weddings/etc.. I saw this one guy shooting the As I Lay Dying concert and I figured, oh ok, he must be a pro right? I should take notes on what he is doing/using. Later on he added me on facebook because I shot this longboard event and that's when I got to see his "work". I couldn't believe it man, he's using pro gear like the D700 and 24-70 yet the shit looks like something I could do better with my phone!

    Not enough.
Hahah also not a pro here but that site is funny. Slowly learning the ropes from you guys and books. No time to take a class at a local school. :/

Although I have done two events for free and I even volunteered to do it just for experience.

*Note: There were paid photographers at the events but I just wanted experience.

**Note: I looked at the finished product of the paid photographers stuff..... The photos were heavily done in PS it looked like and the bride and groom looked like airbrushed dolls. Idk maybe it was me but that looked like poor talent. Maybe I should put a pic on that site.

wow... i'm going to have to make sure none of my photos are on that site..haaa.

But I never hear anything but "yeah man, nice picts" .. so I would like some criticism/critique if anyone has time.....

I don't really edit my photos much, from what I read here most of you are waaaay above my level in processing.

Nah man it's the people that advertise shit on craigslist saying they are pro and will take pro pics. Then when you take a look at their work on facebook it looks like shit. I like the photographers that are down to earth, not the ones who are pretenders! :)

    EDIT:
Btw, I can't believe you got that shot of the humpback whale! That's awesome, I also really like the lizard...great colors. You have good stuff on there!

Know why they get hired? They're cheap. It's hurts for me to say it but it's the sad reality :-(
I shot a press conference for a hockey team and a woman from a local paper (armed with a Nikon D3!!) asked me what my settings were. A D3 user!!!

You have to show people why you're worth their time and money

DITTO D13 ! Some great shots on Flikr ! My question is this, do you intensify colors in the cqmera or in post processing, or do you capture it raw ? I've got a D7000 and rarely get the intense colors I see in many photos. Does a lower ISO yield better color saturation or is it all in processing ? I'm an old film guy and haven't quite figured out this digital stuff yet...

idk how d13 does it but you should be able to raise the saturation and get more intense colors. thats how i do it atleast. imo shooting in raw doesnt make the colors more intense unless you post process...atleast that is in my experience. using raw would probably get better colors if edited. shoot raw if you have something that can edit it, thats what i would do but i only have gimp for now

Let me rephrase, since I am mixing my lexicon... When i said "capture it raw", i meant wysiwyg, what you see is what you get.. Raw as in the actual image you shoot, not RAW format. Sorry for the confusion ! Again, it's old school trying to learn new tricks. I do zero post processing and only shoot for me, so I didn't know if ISO or any non-filter tricks that are obvious to you guys in this new digital generation could pass on to us older newbies...

    Thanks for the response though.
