I just lifted my truck with Bilstein 5100's set at 2.5" in the front with stock springs & UCA's, with a 2" AAL with OME rear shocks & it rides great, not harsh at all and better then stock IMO. Also, with the whole search thing, some ppl do like being a D*** because apparently it's more enjoyable then just offering simple advice. Yes, there IS plenty of info on this site about many topics, and with TIME to find the exact info you are requesting are very helpful, but it is nice expecially being a FORUM for ppl who enjoy helping others with there beloved Tacomas to get a quick answer from time to time. Just my $.02 on the matter.

So where would be the best place to buy the Bilstien 5100's?

I have heard Downsouth Motorsports is usually the cheapest, however I got mine from Fat Bob's garage for $175.00 for the front because I also ordered my OME's from them. Have heard nothing but great things about the place so I got them there. I think if you want 5100's front & back, it's around 299.00 give or take at DS Motorsports. Great reviews for them as well.

what's the difference between the regular 5100's and the pre-load adjustable ones?

-edit- Never mind, it looks like the pre-load shocks are what I want if I also want to go w/bigger tires. Correct me if i'm wrong

There is only one type of 5100's that I am aware of, and they are adjustable from stock height up to 2.5" which is where I set mine at and I love it. I might eventually add some OME 885 springs to the mix, but even with stock springs they are great. The TRD Bilsteins are not 5100's but are great shocks as well from the factory.

Oh yeah, and the rear 5100's are not adjustable. I decided to go with the OME N182 rear shocks because I plan to eventually go with the entire OME set-up, was just to pricey for now but still very pleased. Yes, you will need 5100's set higher then stock all depending on how big of tires you want to get. I have 265/70/17 which is one size bigger then stock and they fit great & look great. At 2.5" you can get 285's on I believe with minor trimming.
