Cat Clamp Installed

No joke, i was at my gf's apartment last night. This time I was able to park within earshot and the whole time i was thinking: "try it again. try. it again."

 

So did you get one clamp or two? Don't we have four cats?

 

What a pain. That sucks you have to do shit like that to protect your self from thiefs. To bad you can't Mad Max booby trap your cat. I think the law would frown upon small explosive charges disigned to remove the hands of crack head thiefs.

 

1st gen have two? to my understanding. I could be wrong, but there are two visible, and vulnerable, from the underbelly. One at the end of the exhaust manifold, and a last one bolted on just before the exhaust can. The one that was taken from me was the one just before the exhaust can.

Yeah, well it's a shame i have to pay for an education, but that's a whole different story. Don't get me started.

 

just wire your truck hot the night before, park it in same place lol..

Ok, Reading through this.... You bag this dudes daughter for one night and your cat converter is stolen. He in turn gets you another " possible stolen" cat and you get a free trip to Mexico out of the deal. Not too shabby.

Haha, you guys crack me up. My coworkers were saying the same thing. Jokes on my end went something like: "a catalytic for free?... Well that makes up for me paying for dinner the past two weeks." Marriage? nowhere near in my mind, but this girl is pretty awesome tho.

As for the cat being stolen, yeah, one of the sanarios of something going wrong went like this...

take it to a smog station.
"there's not enough flow on your exhaust!"
wtf?
"There's something in it"
*crack it open*
*5 lbs of Meth or Weed or Crack*
"care to explain this?"

So my exhaust has been touched without my permission since having the clamp installed. But this time it's something that completely boggles my mind. After life went back to "normal", and my truck went back to it's spot while i drive the honda, a month later a pipe is taken from my truck. *refer to pic below*

Okay to get this: they didn't take the cat (obviously). The rest of the exhaust was still only bolt on. They didn't even take the can of the exhaust, which they could have but they didn't. Instead they only took the last quarter of my exhaust pipe.

Yeah I dunno. Doesn't make any sense. Rationalizing out in my head arguably I'm better off without it as far as flexing goes in the rear. Like last time, part of me was even disappointed they didn't take the exhaust because if they did i could at least get a new one.

 

Well i'll be damned. The Cat Clamp worked!

I suppose. I mean, it doesn't really make any sense why they would just take the pipe. Sheer coincidence? if they took the whole exhaust (minus the cat) they could have had a used gibson exhaust.

It's not where i live in particular. Where my cat got stolen wasn't anywhere where i normally live. Where my pipe was taken... my truck would sit there for months and not have anything wrong with it. And again, why just the pipe?

 

The took it just to piss you off because they couldn't get the cat.

 

You need to slam that thing so they cant get under....

 

It might make you feel a little better But I think that end might have just fallen off. It looks like it was just clamped and not welded, and I don't see any shiny bits that look like they were cut. I'd bet who ever did your cat install loosened it for what ever reason, and didn't torque the thing down tight. My mustang was notorious for exhaust pipes slipping off each other. Learned my lesson to weld it up after the pipe dumped right after the header while sitting at a stop light with a police officer next to me... He wasn't amused.

 

It all sounds a bit fishy to me....funny that the gf's father had connections to quickly set you up with a free to you Cat... But it wasn't free as it was probably stolen from some other poor fellas truck! Not too sure about the folks you're hanging with there man...

As for the clamp, I could see all kinds of junk (sticks, etc) getting caught up there if you are off-road.

I have considered this option. But there are a few things that don't add up.

1) The last "S" portion of the pipe also has hangers on them. The rubber parts are clean off. I dunno, i'm thinking that if the clamp was to come loose the hangers would at least keep it there and i'd hear the pipe banging around. .

2) I've been plenty off roading and neither of the clamps has had any issues of becoming loose.

In the end only a smog will determine if the free cat was worth it. Either way the opportunity of a free cat is too good not to consider. If it doesn't work, no harm no foul. As far as off roading i have yet to take it out since putting the clamp on. I'd imagine crawling would pose a problem, i don't see sand as a major issue.

 

I know this is an old thread but, if I get a 4runner/Tacoma and buy a Cat Clamp, could any old muffler shop install it? I wouldn't have the slightest idea to do it myself nor am I the type of guy who can work on cars other than changing a flat tire.
