hey everyone, i have an 03 double cab with a Kenwood DNX7100 in it. I have searched and read that you can fit two 8" subs behind the back seats. I know what to buy there but what kind/wattage of an amp should I get? i was thinking about this amp:http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Amplifiers/GM+Series/GM-5500T

and putting it under the front driver's seat. I wanna know if this amp will power my subs right or if its too much/ too little? i don't know much about subs/amps/head units etc. any help is appreciated.

Pic your subs first before the amp

You can never have to much amp power and in fact, more is better then needed so you have what we call headroom.

The reason you want more is because if you have too little amp power the amp will distort. Amp distortion is very bad for speakers as amp distortion is a square sound wave.

So, lets say you pic two 8'' subs(very good idea btw, 8''s are very clean and tight) that are..oh idk..200w RMS each. NEVER LOOK AT PEAK WATTAGE. RMS is what matters. So you'd naturally think that a 400w RMS amp would be perfect right? Well..it'll work. But not a smart choice. Professional live sound guys go by the rule that you need 2-3 times the power from an amp then the speaker. Now you don't need to go that crazy lol but for 400w RMS..id say at least a 500w RMS amp. But idealy a 600w RMS amp. Then you have to go about setting the Gain on the amp correctly so as to not over power the actual speakers themselves.

So id pic the subs first before an amp.

Then look for an amp. You gonna find type D amps are best for subs, they are small too and very efficient. Next choice is an A/B Mono block amp.

I highly recommend the e3.8 subs from Elemental Designs. Very reasonable in price and perform VERY VERY well. It's hard to beat at $65 each.

thanks man i really appreciate it! haha i know what you mean... i was writing an essay for school on a website they prefer and my internet went down! i was like dam!!

EDIT: ok what if i get a 4-channel amp and bridge the two subs at 300 Watts (RMS) x 2 @ 4 Ohms (Bridged)

the subs handle 120 watts nominal... will that work?

Yea that will work. But id just run a mono block amp instead of a bridged 4 channel amp.. be much better. It would be hard to wire the sub channel off the head unit like that. What subs did you pick?? thats kinda low power for any sub..

Id go with these personally. Had the 10'' versions in my old 86. Sounded fantastic.
Only pic i have of the setup as it was stolen a week and half later...burned down the truck and shop too..

    Heres the subs
    http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_21926_Kicker-CVT84-10CVT84.html

then id pair it with this amp wired at 2ohms(so in parallel)
    http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_21926_Kicker-CVT84-10CVT84.html

Plenty of head room, and good clean subs.

Sorry i didn't do my write up again. I have been really busy in the recording studio doing a few albums. And half the time i can't even load this site for some reason.

I can still do a big explanation on amps if you'd like tho.

^you wire them in series or parallel depending on the impedance (ohms) you are tryin to achieve on the amp.

I made it custom myself. It's really just a top plate to cover the bin area and seal it up after you've sealed the holes in the steel.

It's a great box, and eD subs were known for good performance, but elemental designs is no more. They closed up shop a few months ago, so ebay may be your best bet, if that's the sub you choose.
