URD = Hydrolock?

Hi all, noob here, just doing some research on intakes for my truck. After talking to people, I have narrowed my decision down to URD CAI or AFI CAI.

I showed my roommate the URD, and he brought up the idea of Hydro-Lock if it rains too hard and the intake sucks in too much water.

The deciding factor will be if I am at any risk at all for hydro-lock with the URD. it does not rain very often out here in SoCal, but when it does, it can come down pretty hard, and quick. If there is even a 10% chance of Hydro-Lock, I am going to spring for the AFI over the URD.

Look, there are hundreds of people on this site safely using the URD intake. If you plan on driving underwater across lakes...dont use it.

It rains harder in South Florida then anywhere, and I have yet to have 1 problem... but i also installed a K&N dry filter sock to help resist water.

Many people will say that the K&N sock takes away from power & mpg, but its worth the piece of mind to me so I run it.

 

Hydro lock needs more or less a submerged intake-Not a few drops of rain.

Like Craig said- use the water sock if you are worried and otherwise-Rest easy and suck in tons of air.

Let me be sure I understand this. You replaced the stock intake (which is already a CAI) with an aftermarket CAI to increase power & MPG, but then added a filter sock which reduces the power and mpg. Wouldn't it have been easier and a whole lot cheaper to just put in a good aftermarket drop in filter?

 

Yep. Only way to get hydrolock is if your intake is completely submerged.

Tuner cars have CAIs that start like 2 inches from the ground. I think a truck will be fine.

 

True...but don't underestimate splashing from the tires and other body pannels...directly or indirectly. A friend hydro-locked my old car when driving through a large puddle. It was only a couple inches deep, but large in area. The intake was about 10" off the ground behind the bumper.

 

just get a snorkel if you're worried.

 

Rain is not something to worry about. But off roading/water crossings are. I would just stick with the stock intake with a drop in.

My truck is an X-SP, and came from the PORT with the Borla cat-back & Borla intake.

When I removed the Borla intake for the URD, I had to purchase an engine cover (the top plastic piece) because I never had one with the Borla intake.

People can say whatever they want, opinions very, but in MY TRUCK, with MY EXHAUST, and MY SETUP, I noticed a considerable increase in throttle response at about 3700 RPM up... and I have gained about 2 mpg. Yeah, it sounds much better then the Borla, but I could honestly care less about the sound personally.

THe URD intake was the first step, as I am also installing a URD MAF calibrator and headers (havent decided on which headers yet).

Only after the correct AFR adjustements are made (via the MAF cal) can the "real" power increases be seen...or atleast this is what I've been told.

I find it really hard to believe that the K&N dry-charger is having any substantial impact in performance. For the added piece of mind, I'll keep it installed!!! If I ever move to the desert, I will consider removing it then...

 

ive been through the random hard rains here in socal and the snow up in the mountains, no issues yet with the urd tcai. i use the injen filter cover for when i do the car wash, sometimes a little rain is good and cleans the filter a little like others say, if ur gonna be doin river crossings, then this intake is not for you
