Wondering if any one could recommend a hand winch they have used to get unstuck. I rarely hit trails and just need a winch just in case..

Plati-Dip Badges & Removed a few, added D-rings in Bed, added recovery D-shackle, Added Front Recovery Hook, TRD Skid Plate-Rhinoed, added 2 mini tie downs, removed rear seat headrests.
Try a High Lift Jack, works as a come-a-long too, google it.

    I agree w/ using a come-along.
I'm imagining a hand-winch as what you'd pull a boat onto a trailer with... that thing would be flopping all over when you try to crank on it, unless it's mounted to a hitch or some other hard point. The come-along is pulled taut at each end and you can go back and forth easily instead of trying to stabilize the winch as you go around and around.

Hand winches aren't that difficult to stabilize. The pressure on the line holds them fairly steady. I have an older hand winch but I'm not sure if it's heavy enough to drag out a truck. They have gear reducers so you can be cranking furiously and you're only going to move it an inch a minute. I guess it's better than nothing though...

Definitely get a hi-lift jack and make sure you have jacking points on your vehicle and/or the right adapters to hook the jack to the wheels. Getting the vehicle up and out of whatever it's stuck in or on will make the winching job easier.

Have you considered a small electric winch with several pulley blocks to increase the pulling capacity? Would save you a ton of work and it's nice to have the peace of mind.

It's all dependent on your budget of course, but you can get a 4500 lb winch, single pulley block, and mount that wraps around your tow ball for around $250.

Not to sure about ahand winch. Puts you in the line of fire if the line was to break. Manmade is bound to break sometime.

My old man always kept a come a long in his truck tool box. It saved us a couple of times out in BFE. he has only ever owned 2wd trucks and has covered hundreds and hundreds of miles out in the middle of no where hunting and fishing. When a good line and lots of momentum wont get you through its good to have something for back up!

Any tractor supply store should sell a good come a long. Just make sure and have a long enough recovery strap in case there arent any trees realy close :D

You might need more cable? Experts chime in. I guess it depends on distance to attachment point.

ARB makes a hand winch, but its probably $$$.

If you go with the hilift, practice with it before you get stuck so you will know what it takes, what accessories to have on hand.

I would replace the cable with a synthetic line and also keep a normal 20'-30' recovery strap in the truck as well. Every vehicle should have a recovery strap regardless though .

Yes, this. You can also use the tow strap to extend the reach of your winch cable if needed...

For the same money, actually. See my post above with the link to Amazon.
