If one is that concerned about ABS stopping distance being doubled in low traction conditions then they probably shouldn't be driving in low traction conditions to begin with.

It makes plenty of sense. A driver should either be driving at a speed that is slow enough that stopping distance isn't a concern or they should stay at home until conditions improve. If stopping distance is a concern, then the driver is driving too fast for the conditions. If the driver is driving too fast for the conditions, then they shouldn't be driving in those conditions in the first place.

I've driven in some pretty nasty stuff, and pretty happy with the traction control and ABS systems. It's a little to get used to, when you're generally used to doing the control yourself, but it works nicely.

The last couple of winters I've done some road trips through very nasty conditions, and my 09 is a champ. VSC and 4WD will get you through anything steadily. Definitely not as "fun" without sliding through corners and stuff.

The only time I've had troubles with ABS is on ice so slick that it wouldn't have made a difference with or without. Usually at some speed though, the ABS drops out and the wheels lock up--I think it's under 5MPH. You might have to have been going that speed before you applied the brakes though, I can't remember--but I'm pretty sure I've locked them up before.

The first time VSC popped on, I didn't know what to think of all the buzzers and lights. I was making a "rapid turn around" on wet sand on the beach.

Interesting that you have never had an experience that you needed to slow down or stop unexpectedly in snow

In those circumstances , I prefer not to have the ABS eliminate any stopping power I may have had .

In those circumstances, as jandrews alluded to, I prefer not to use brakes at all. I use my transmisison and engine, which are usually good enough to slow down to about 5 mph from pretty much any speed, then I use my brakes to slow from 5 mph to 0 if I have to. So I don't really care whether my brakes are ABS or not.

As for "stopping unexpectedly in snow", I alway assume that I will have to stop at any given time... IMO, that's part of anticipation and planning ahead.

I agree , and use engine braking where possible , however sudden downshifting can produce similar results .

I don't use my brakes where possible , sometimes it's not avoidable , in those instances I wish I could disable the ABS system .

I am not intending this as an arguement with you

Only my '05 had bad brakes (ABS) that wouldn't stop until I would almost hit something on wet roads or dirt roads (hated it). Complaints to service said that was normal, lol. My '01 and my '10 both had/have great brakes that don't do that... and all 3 had ABS.

Pretty much this...I drive like a little old woman in snow/ice not because *I* can't drive, but because apparently *no one else* can.

Luckily, once the front bumper goes on here in a few weeks, I'll be able to have significantly fewer concerns in that regard :D
