Tekonsha P3 brake controller. Can I borrow your brains?

Need your brains for a moment.
Have an 06 4x4 DCSB with tow package. I am confused as to whether or not I need to buy a harness adapter for my Tekonsha P3 brake controller. I have done searches, etc but am not quite clear on it. How would I install it without buying the harness? I bought a used P3 that also came with a Dodge harness.

Oh yeah, also. Noticed this brake controller harness is cheap, but says it is for 2007-2011. I have an 06. Does the 07 wire up differently? This I have not searched yet, sorry.

the brake contorller will work for your 06. same thing

No, you do not NEED the vehicle specific harness. I wired mine with the factory pigtail (included when you bought the truck) and it works fine.

Regarding ground wire. So the brown wire goes to the white wiring from the Prodigy3. I don't need run those wires to a metal piece?

I have a 2012 with tow package.

 

Can someone confirm if this is correct? I'm pretty confused by what the Tekonsha P3 controller diagram says and what the pigtail harness connector says. I have a 2014 DCSB with tow package.

 

Not sure if you got your answer yet, but I am starting the same project as you today and am going to use the wiring scheme posted on this thread. I will let you know if it works shortly

 

HootYeah - you are good to go with this wiring diagram, just splice the wires according to the diagram in this post and you should have no trouble. I just finished the wiring, plugged in the P3, and it powers up and I can tweak with the settings. Will test with the trailer later this week but anticipate no problems. Now on to mounting the unit, best of luck to you.

 

I got impatient and just went for it. First time I've trusted someone online lol... Worked perfect. Jacked up my trailer and tested the brakes to see if they were engaging. Excited to get this beast out on the road! Will be towing a 1986 22' Wilderness trailer by fleetwood.

Also, there is a cubbie right of the steering column that you can pop out, I ran the wires of the unit through that hole without any of mounting screws, surprisingly the pressure from the wires in the back after the insert/cubbie is popped back in holds the unit perfectly. I'm going to devise a way to make sure it stays stable without drilling holes in my truck. To much of a sissy for that....

 

I thought pretty long about where I wanted this and I feel like having my right hand ready to reach down near the steering wheel to hit the manual trigger is ideal. will stabilize it somehow but it's pretty solid.

 

I installed my P3 in my 2015 Tacoma DCSB OR using the factory provided towing package pigtail and the pigtail that came with the P3. I sliced (soldered) the wires per the thread above:

Factory pigtail color -----------> P3 pigtail color
Black with red tracer (thick)------> Black (thick)
Solid Brown----------------------> White
Green w/white tracer-------------> Red
Red (thick)----------------------> Blue (thick)
Solid Green----------------------> Does not connect to P3 pigtail (tape up out of the way)

And the unit appears to operate properly. I still need to try things out with the trailer.

Like tractng, I was also wondering if the brown/white wires also need to be tied to a ground somewhere or is that already done with the brown wire coming from the factory connector. The directions for the factory connector call this wire "trailer ground", but can I assume that this is also tied to the truck chassis ground?

 

WalkeJ - Yes, from what I have found the brown wire from the factory connector is ground and you should be good to go with connecting the way included in the diagram. I installed this same configuration a few months ago and have had no issues since with multiple towing trips. It is a great controller, enjoy.

 

I pull out the little cubby when I use the P3.

I bought some industrial strength Hook and Pile tape (Velcro) and put the Hook part (scratchy side) on the P3 and the Pile (soft side) on the upper portion of the area where the cubby was.

When I am towing I feed the harness through the opening that is behind the removed cubby and connect the P3 and stick the P3 Hook to the dash Pile and it works perfect and is up out of the way and is easy to see and access.

When I am not towing, I pull it off put it back in the pouch that comes with the P3 and store it in the truck. The harness pushes back and the cubby snaps back into place like it never came out.
