Should I trade for 4x4?

OK. So, about a year ago I got my '10 Prerunner SR5 brand new. At that time, I was driving it to work about 25 miles a day round trip. Due it being my only vehicle and daily driver, I didn't get the 4x4. I almost immediately began regretting it, but felt I had made the right move because it was my daily.

Fast forward to now. A job change now means I drive 150 miles a day roundtrip. This forced me to get a 2011 Ford Fiesta to use as my daily driver, and now my truck is a weekend only fun machine. Use it occasionally for hauling my boat, and band equipment for live shows.

Now that the truck is no longer my daily driver, I am at an impasse. I could either make it into a super badass Prerunner (winch bumper, spindle lift, 35's, arb locker, etc.), OR I could try and trade for a 4x4 Tacoma while the value is still high. I have ordered an All Pro rear spring kit but it has not arrived yet and it could always go on a 4x4.

I was going to order spindles yet but have held off because of my recent thoughts on going to 4x4, since those would not be able to work on a 4x4. My mods are the following:

-Wheels/Tires (would directly transfer to 4x4)
-Stereo (kept factory headunit and didn't cut any wires-easy to transfer)
-Toolbox (10 seconds to transfer)
-Decals (would lose these, but could get another set from Sockmonkey later)

My payoff on the truck is 4 years/10,000 dollars remaining. So, if I were to get 23/24k trade in, that would net 13/14 for the truck. So the new truck would need to be in the 26 to 27k mark to keep my payments similar. What should I do?

 

If U got the extra money.. I paid off my prerunner and I have extra money now but I am just going to keep my prerunner and put a locker in it.

 

you must have put down quite a bit to have 4 years/$10K remaining. i was in the same situation as you...got a prerunner but then wanted a 4x4. so 6 months later, i traded in the prerunner and got the 4x4. if you really want it, then get the 4x4.

Edit: Also, how do you like the Fiesta? I REALLY like a LOT of what Ford is doing these days and am considering the Fiesta/Focus when my current daily driver craps the bucket.

The fiesta is great! I am getting 35 mpg even going 80 to 85 mph all the way to work. When I go 70 to 75, I get 40 plus mpg. It rides super smooth and the dual clutch automatic is pretty tight. Very comfortable as well. I got it over the Yaris because it is more comfortable. I have no complaints other than the noisy factory tires.

 

hmm... dude, you really don't need the 4x4... thats silly boys stuff really.

really since you have the pre-runner the suspension is well enough. just be wise with it off- roading and you'll be fine.

He's planning on using it as a weekend fun machine...If you plan to off road, I would buy it before taking out the prerunner and banging it up, depreciating its value.


It's really up to the OP if he wants a 4X4 or not IMHO...well, that and his bank account. In all honesty, in the snow-ridden/icy roads I commute in, I wouldn't never considered a 2WD truck...others buy them then regret soon. As said earlier, in this modern day of airbags, anti-lock brakes and TPMS sensors, I don't know how they can legally sell a 2WD truck anymore...just my honest opinion.

 

Thats kind of stupid... Thats like saying "how can they legally sell 2wd cars, when there's all-wheel drive cars".

 

Man, those car payments have to suck. Would you really off-road much on the weekends to constitute the cost? Hate to sound like the old crusty but... just saying.

 

Except cars aren't meant to do hard work, and trucks are.

This is a big problem with this site; seeing trucks in the same category as cars.

Well because its a 150 mile drive now. But yeah I'm realizing now back when I did the shorter drive that part time 4wd doesn't hurt you much in the mpg category like the Jeep Grand Cherokee I used to have that had alltime 4wd.

 

If it's just a weekend warrior, do you really need a $26/$27k truck?

If I were you, I'd find a less expensive truck, still in decent shape, and use the extra cash to mod the hell out of it.

I have a PreRunner and love it - as of right now, I have no desire to go to 4x4.
