Lubin' her up!

Was wondering what parts I should be greasing regularly and at which point do I know it has received enough grease. I just recently purchased a grease gun and figured since I'm at 80k miles and I know I, myself, haven't done it, it'd be a good time to start and make sure it's getting done. Thanks for the help in advance.

i'm interested as well. i got an '01 4x4 and am looking to stop this damn squeaking. clutch is maintained...already read all those threads. but it sounds like the suspension is making the noise. i already WD-40'd the ucas and ball joints.

Isn't that what I said? Not sure if it would. There is an extra drive line area with the front having power to the wheels and not JUST the rear... that might make for some extra zerks, 'bungs', to be greased...

 

It's probably your leaf pack squeeking. If it is, there are a few fixes, the easiest and quickest is to take a pressure washer to the leaf springs to blow out all the sand, silt, salt, etc. Second, lube up between the leaf springs. If you jack the truck up by the frame it takes the pressure off the leaf springs so they separate enough to apply some lubricant. Don't use regular old grease, it attracts dirt and will make it quiet for a little while but much worse in a few days. I believe some are having luck with lithium grease If you can get the leaf springs apart enough to insert the graphite wear pads, that would be the best solution. Also, lube up the shackles.

 

No you just said trd, the 4wd have grease zerks
and the prerunners don't on the driveshafts IIRC

 

yeah i read about that one too. didn't think it was coming from the rear because like a fool i applied some shiny undercoating spray when i was washing it to make it water repellant under there and i think that lead to the squeaking.

never applied near the leaf springs though...just front wheel wells...but ill have someone else listen to it and try that

Thats a negative ghostrider, plenty of prerunners
with trd package, just means you got a locker and different coil/shocks

 

So no one knows which zerks are to be regularly checked and at which point they are 'full' of grease or at the optimal greased point?

 

Grease all the zerks on the drivetrain, add grease till it starts to come out.

 

Depends on the conditions your truck sees. If you run in a lot of silt and dusty conditions, or where the driveline is constantly under water, you should grease frequently, like once a week or when you get back from a trail ride. The grease forces out water and dirt that's worked it's way into the bearing.

My truck is mostly a pavement pounder so I grease everything at each oil change or if I think of it between oil changes. All you need is a grease gun and a tube of grease. Nothing to it!

DON'T grease the slip yoke until grease comes out. Just until it moves a little I just give mine 3 or 4 pumps every oil change. the U joints i hit them until the black grease comes out a little.

 

I'm not sure what the 'technical' term is for it but I've always used plain old black automotive grease. I'll see whats in my gun when I get home (brand/type).

 

I don't have a picture but the slip Yoke zerk will be on the drive shaft itself.
