So the dealer just called and offered to buy my truck...

I just got a call from the dealer fleet dept where I purchased my DCab Prerunner back in 2008. She said that she had a customer that was looking for my style truck. She then offered to buy back my truck and put me into a new Tacoma or another Toyota of my choice. Hmmmm, weird, but my curiosity is piqued.

Can't say I've ever heard of that and I said as much. She said it's a very rare occurrence (never happened to me or anyone I know) and since I've been a repeat customer over the years, they wanted to offer this to me. I asked why they couldn't just do a dealer trade like they did to get my truck? She stated that it's actually cheaper for them to do something like this. She went on to state that with the troubles in Japan it's hard for them to get any new vehicles and their used lot is nearly empty.

Ok, so I asked her how it works.
    1. They do a free inspection and tell me how much they'll offer to buy the truck right then without any obligations. I asked if it's considered a trade-in? It is (strike one).
    2. They buy the truck back and put me in a new one. Ok... but that means I refi and have more payments? Probably (strike two)

Just for curiosity sake, I said I may be willing, but I'd want my truck in a 4x4 or maybe an FJ in 4x4. I then told her I'd have to think it over and I'd call her back on Sunday.

Now I put it out to you all... I've never heard of anything like this, have you? It was a straight cold-call to me as I've only gone to the dealership recently for a couple small parts, certainly not a new vehicle. I really like my truck and I told her so. The whole thing is odd to me, but... A new truck, or keep mine? I'm curious to go in on Sunday just to see how much they'd buy my truck for. I'm fully prepared to walk away laughing...

    Thoughts?

Interesting. Like I said, never heard of it. Chances are I'd buy my next truck there eventually as I've purchased my last two from them. I'm not really seeing an upside for me in this at the moment.

Yep, that's an old car sales trick. Just trying to get you in there to upgrade. They don't have a "seller" waiting to buy your vehicle. One of my best friends is a Toyota salesman... they have many sneaky ways to sell vehicles. Some of the more less ethical salesman do a lot worse. My friend is a straight-up great salesman and works his ass off so he never has to do those sorts of things.

The dealership my wife works at does this all the time. And they will buy your vehicle out right at any time.

They may very well have a buyer. A good salesperson is always on the look out for a certain car/truck, even certain color for there customers. A bud of mine just traded in a Jeep, it never even went though clean up. The new owner (jeep) left before my bud had all his paperwork completed.

True. They may, indeed. I know my friend would make a call like that if he really had a buyer, but not if he didn't. I'm just saying chances are they don't, but it is one way of getting someone in the dealership to consider a newer model.

Your call but it's nothing out of the ordinary. I used to get a lot of calls when it was newer, now I still get plenty of fliers saying they want to buy my truck back. They just want to make money off you (otherwise they wouldn't be doing it). They could make it worth your while if you do want to trade in for another vehicle.

Yeah, the whole thing seemed odd to me, now I know. Thanks for the input. The other funny thing was that I asked if my fleet sales guy (who my whole family has purchased from over the years) still worked there. She said he did and was a little reluctant to say I could work with him on the deal if I was more comfortable with that. Heck, I may have a little time to kill on Sunday just to amuse myself and check out some new trucks. (So I guess that part of the pitch might work :p:D )

There is nothing wrong with it, they are just trying to make a living. Right now, most dealerships are trying to clear their lots for the '12s and maybe that particular dealership or salesman is needing and end-o-month boost. My dealership is having a huge blowout sale this weekend... they are open all weekend with huge incentives, etc. However, like t4daddy pointed out, she may indeed have an immediate buyer for your truck. Who knows. Good luck.

Works for them, if you do it - they turn one sale into two when you trade, and they sell this trade-in immediately instead of it sitting on their lot for a month or two.

If they make you a deal that you feel is one of a kind then I'd jump on it. Otherwise I'd tell them to fuck off. They might very well have a buyer looking for something similar to what you have but they're still angling to make money off of you. Ultimately they're trying to screw you, I wouldn't budge on it unless you're screwing them.

This exact thing happened to me 3 weeks ago.

Today I own a 2011 DC Sport. 3 weeks ago an 08 DC Sport. They did make me one heck of deal!

I'd say look into at least, but be willing to walk away.

Just for some number to use for comparison. I used several internet sources to get a price for my 2004 DC OR TRD. Best price was $12,900. Got $12,500 from the dealer trading for a 2011 DC OR TRD. They cleaned up the 2004 and put it on the lot for $18,500. It was gone into weeks.

If you elect to "trade in" hold out for the highest price.

    Cheers

Also the price of used cars has risen some due to the wonderful economy. They buy yours, you buy another one and they sell your old one due to the demand. I got acouple calls from my dealer and multiple letters from every other dealer in my area wanting to buy my truck.
