    This is called Geological laser ablation. The sample that i ablated is a Zircon, Done at the University of Arizona last year. These are our lasers that we sell making these holes. Just think the bottom of the pit has an average flatness of +-2 nanometer.:D
    The original pic is a femto second laser that needs some alignment, as you can tell the beam is not concentric with the aspheric lens it is going through.
