What is the purpose of a Union?

Serious question, I have never had a job where I felt I needed representation, my employer has always been fair. Is this a trade issue, for example do "electrical" workers get screwed by employers?

Why would I need to pay someone to support my interest?

You really don't now a days...

Unions were good back in the 20's, 30's and 40's when the work was hard, extremely long hours, and poor work conditions.

Now, it's nothing more than a group that bargains for anything/everything in their favor (huge pensions, etc). Public sector unions are some of the worst, costing us billions of dollars in taxes.

The Union has enabled us the best wages and benefits in our industry. And now, as UPS is trying it's best to rid themselves of their "overpaid" drivers and replace them with new hires at a lower rate, the Union is there to protect our jobs.

Just my opinion, but you know how the saying goes... Everyone has one and they all stink. :p

As long as we don't go political, there shouldn't be a problem. Right?

Yep. I'm not a union guy so I can't say either way. I have two union members in my family (Teamsters and AFL-CIO, I believe) and they are ruthlessly defensive of their membership. We get into all the time but it's just fun banter between relatives.

You too huh? AFL-CIO in my family, and they're the same way. I try to avoid the conversation, but the topic never fails to come up.

I love them (my uncle and one of my cousins). It's fun. They rag on me too... it's been going on for years.

I wouldnt even want to think about working at UPS without the union. No one could live up to their standards for production.10-12 hour days are the norm.We would all be fired and replaced by a part time work force if they had their way.Not gonna get in a pissing match with any anti union people. This is just my opinion

If you were ever in a union you would understand. Have you ever seen how the RR treated the Chinese ? It would still be like that today. Ohh and anymore badmouthing unions and you mite want to form one to protect you while u sleep. Lol
BTW I won't even shop at Walmart cause of there anti union stance. But I can afford not to thanks to my union.
