I have a feeling Ford's EcoBoost engine would fall apart on Toyota's test stand. Part of the reason for the Ecoboost's power is direct injection. Toyota has been using direct injection in the LS460 for years now, but doesn't use it in the 4.6L Tundra/Sequoia/GX460 engine for durability reasons.

And yes, I would buy a Taco with a 4.6L V8, in a regular cab.

I think having a small V8 in a double cab would increase MPGs.Most people that complain about MPGs seen to have the heavier double cab.The V6 is working harder in a double cab and a V8 would ease the effort.

LS1-T56 swap, Z06 ported heads, cam, Titanium valves, Kevlar clutch. Now building a forged stroker (383) and all the ponies! Old setup was rod-knockin on heaven's door...
I have a 5.7L V8 (LS1) in my 98 Tacoma, it got about 24mpg last long trip to Havasu and that was going about 90mph through the desert.

I love my Aluminum V8, simply awesome, especially when I start it and everyone in the parking lot is staring at it thinking WTF!!??

Nothing like a big motor in a little truck, and I can tow a huge trailer even of the wheels fall off, hardly notice it with all the extra torque I have.

So my answer is Yes I would opt for the V8, but I would rather have the LS1 as an option due to the aftermarket support, compared to the 4.7.

Yeah I know this question was asked of the 2nd gens, so sue me.....

Agree. I can't speak about durability/reliability of the Ecoboost, but it definitely performs well in the F-150 IMO. Seems like putting that engine (or similar engine design) in the lighter Tacoma would be a win win for increased performance and better fuel efficiency.

You may get your wish in 2015 only it will be a four cylinder turbo. A EcoBoost is a dual turbo engine. This will get the MPGs up for the new 2016 cafe standards.I like small V8 but it will never happen.

I just went from a V8 4Runner to V6 Tacoma and yes I would love that V8 in the Tacoma. You can list out the specs and say it isn't that different, but I can tell the difference. I love my Tacoma and the V6 is fine, but the V8 power was nice.

At first I wasn't too pleased with my V4 2.7, but I noticed a huge improvement in mpg from my last car ( a v6 coupe ) , and this car still gets to the 70s fast when needed. Couldn't be more happier

V8 tacoma would be sick but I feel a supercharged V6 is just as good in a truck this size, I would get a Diesel though.

NOW! wha!! tranny rebuild every 5K miles!! for real???

I have heard from two different dealers that next year's Taco will have an option for the 1UR-FE, V8 4.6L @ 310 HP.

I could see replacing my blown 330 HP 1GR-FE for that motor used in low milage when the 6 banger hits 200K...
