Ok youve all seen my threads on lifts, well Im planning on regearing at the same time. From what ive seen on this site, for an 09 double cab automatic it sounds like I need 4.56? now I know NOTHING about gears.. Does this mean I need them in front and in back? and is there different types of gears? Im completely ignorant about this... Feel free to make fun of me, I would :D

Why are you re-gearing? Are you putting 37" tires on your truck?

Ok so maybe it was a dumb question. I just thought going to 33s would lose quite a bit of gas mileage and you could do a regear to compensate...

    Not necessary for 33's

You will notice alittle loss in power and gas mileage. You don't really have to do a regear but if you do decide to go with Yukon gears front and back.

You'd have to do a hell of a lot of driving to have your gas mileage make up for the cash you'll be dumping on gears. You might lose 2 mpg with 33" tires.

The best (cheapest) way to improve mileage with larger tires is to keep them properly inflated.

    You'll notice power loss.......in RPM's

For example: when you get on the highway and your trying to get up a hill/mountain.... you'll have your foot on the floor and you still won't gain any speed getting up the hill. In fact, you'll drop down in speed because your RPM's at say 60mph will be much less with stock gears than if you put new (higher) gears in.

If you're willing to *get used to it* (the power loss) - save your money.

Other than that...... you could change your gears but I would highly recommend researching the cost involved. In most cases - a carrier change & gearing setup is required ($$). While you're changing the carrier - you might as well buy a traction device (locker, LSD, posi, or whatever).

I would re gear for 33's, but that s me. 4:10's would be about right for a 33" tire. Or MAYBE 4:30's, but they would be on the shorter side of the curve. Performance would definatly increase. Re gearing is one of the best things you can do when going to laerger tires.

Its not that much to re gear. Maybe $1100.00, but in the scope of mods, thats not bad. Especially when considering the performance gains.

I agree with Chris......I went with 4:88's on my rig. It calls for 4:56's but i wanted alittle more torque and power. Yes I gave up some rpm's and gas mileage ,but i don't do a ton of highway miles to worry about it.

Yep. Anytime I regear a vehicle, I will "Over gear" it. ;)

if ur putting 33's on a v6...theres prob no reason to regear. u'll lose a little power but not much.

I on the other hand have a 4cyl with 33X12.5 and i feel a real loss of power. i went from 19MPG to 15MPG and it feels like a dog sometimes.

When i have the money i will be regearing to 4.56's thats a good gear ratio for 33's

Man, I wish it was only 1100 for gears. I got the 4.88's for my truck and it cost me 2300. I had to end up getting an Arb locker up front to carry the gears. They told me that the stock carrier was to small. The front was the problem, the rear was fine.

Nope, no problem at all. I just wasn't planning on doing a locker this soon.

They are cheaper because they have a thiner ring gear and a smaller pinion. To get the higher gearing out of the same size ring gear, they have to make the ring gear thinner. Usually, they are not as strong as a lower gear either.

im also pretty clueless about gears and the re-gearing process but ive heard that it does increase performance? my truck is lowered how ever and is only rear wheel drive. do you have any input on a re gear for my truck?

If you are lowered 2wd I assume you also run low profile tires. I can't imagine why you would want lower gears too.

When you say it "improves performance", that is all relative to what you want from your truck. Lower gears will make the truck feel peppier because the transmission will walk through them quicker. It will most likely lower your quarter mile times and get you across an intersection faster. You will sacrifice a lot for that little buzz though on a street truck. The transmission will be rowing up and down constantly, and your highway performance will be severely impacted. If you are running low tires, you are already running under factory final gearing. I wouldn't push that any lower.
