Vermont has been DESTROYED by hurricane Irene

I haven't seen much talk on the forum about what hurricane Irene has done to Vermont. I thought I'd make a thread so all could understand that the hurricane was a huge blow to all of Vermont. Maybe no one is talking about the aftermath because they are still stranded, without power.

This from an email I wrote to a friend
"The rest of VT was not so lucky. Every road in VT with the exception of the two Interstates had wash outs or bridge collapses that closed the roads. You can't drive from one town to another because even if the road looks intact, the water most likely washed the subsurface away. I know lots of farms now have a gravel stream bed where their fields were instead of fertile soil. Don't know if you can rebuild the soil. The infrastructure of Vermont is pretty much destroyed. The water ways are now polluted with oil, gas, and sewage. Pretty much the worst case scenario, second to loss of life, which fortunately was not very high."

It is mind blowing to see this devastation in my home state, and home town. There are small communities that have literally washed away. There are towns with no roads in or out, with damaged powerlines. The utility companies can't get in and the people can't get out. I've heard that it may be weeks before some towns get power restored.

Pass some popcorn to show you read the post and tell a friend outside of the forum to look at the devastation caused by Hurricane Irene in Vermont. I know here in Montana no one has a clue what has happened.

i some on the news last night about it. hate to hear of such tragedy. I lived in the panhandle of florida growing up so I know first hand what hurricaines can do.

 

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those in need. I have watched a couple of news videos from up there. Truely devestating.

 

It's terrible. Watched the weather channel last night and I was shocked to see the devastation. Thinking about my fellow americans up north!

I've seen bits of clips on the news while getting ready in the morning. The scenes from there are aweful! Has anyone spoken to some of the VT members at all?

Hope they are all okay! Thoughts are with them at this time!

 

As bad as all this sucks for us,it's still no where near Katrina. I can't even imagine going thru Katrina. We are to get more flooding today

 

i have a few friends that live on the New Hampshire side of the Vermont state line. she was telling me that she has friends that have lost houses and she was supposed to have a job interview this thursday but can't go because the roads are washed away and she can't get there. thankfully all of her family is safe but there are several others struggling with this disaster.

Since when does Vermont have sandy beaches and palm trees?

 

I have friends and family in central VT that have been seriously effected by Irene. My inlaws are totally isolated as are may towns in the area. Bridges and roads are flooded or wiped out completly. No power, phone or internet in many places too. My wife and I waited 2 days to hear if her folks were ok. My thoughts and prayers go out to all that have been affected. Kind of sad that the news just shows a short video clip and that's all, even when Obama has declared the state a "disaster area".

I'm from VT, we live just about 5 miles from the CT River, which was a big part of the issues here. I don't know how, but we really lucked out at my place. Our lower lawn flooded, and I had to rake/shovel up 5 inches of river mud from there, but many, MANY others had that same issue inside their houses, if they still had a house at all, that is.

I realize how very lucky we were, and I hope to find ways to help those not as fortunate.
