Well im about to graduate from HS in June hopefully and i've got a couple questions. I want to go to Clemson for Computer Science as I have a intrest in the computing field. At the same time though, I want to go into Law Enforcement and possibly the FBI in the Future working as a Computer Network Specialist or a Computer Engineer. I really want to go into the LE Field but I do not know exactly where I want to go after college. Law Enforcement or Industrial? o_O Hoping some LEO and Computer related TW members could chime in and point me in some directions. Thanks

I vote computer engineering based on what you expressed interest in. It is basically a modern branch of electronics engineering and gives you a broader range of possiblilities for the higher paying job fields than just computer science, in my opinion. But either one is not bad, if that is where you interests lie.

It seems like many of the computer science degrees focus heavier on pure programming language skills, where the CE goes into a lot more depth into other very marketable skills like electronics theory, networking (including fabrication, integrating the hardware and network administration ) plus many other standard engineering topics. Probably a lot more high powered math classes to take though.

A buddy of mine graduated with a degree in computer science and ended up working for a contractor to the NSA. He didn't plan on working for the government but it goes to show, if you've got a good degree, you can go places. I'd focus on your schooling, find a university you like and tell your advisors when you get there what you want to do. They can give you advice on which electives might set you apart and lean you towards LE while still maintaining the computer science degree.

Good for you getting accepted at Clemson. My daughter thought of goinng there, great school, but just too far away from NY (and too expensive to fly her back and forth).

If you can work on your degree at such a good school go for it!

Computer Science is a great degree. If you want to go into the FBI, you'll need a high GPA, so focus and keep those grades up.

You can enter FBI, CIA, or really any federal agency as an analyst with a degree in engineering.

During career week at my university, CIA, FBI, Army, Navy were all recruiting engineers for various positions.

Just keep your grades up and learn a mission critical language to make yourself stand out a bit more.
