I think he should be fine with it. It may be a little heavy for him now, but in time it will be fine.

I would stick with iron sights before getting a good quality optic. Cheap (<$100) scopes never work well in my experience.

get a pad for the stock and spend the rest on ammo.

if you are bench shooting then I wouldnt worry about a sling until the time comes for needing one. As for a red dot over a magnified scope depends on how you want to use the rifle. under 75 yards I would say a red dot it fine. anything over I personally like to have a magnified scope, I like to see where im hitting. You can get enrty level nikon scopes that work fine on AR's.

IMO you should wait on upgrading anything and just get some rounds down range. You don't want to skimp on optics/lights, you get what you pay for.

Invest in some good iron sights and get some ammo. Down the road explore the world of optics and other Gucci gear.

You will do what you want, just my .02. ;)

The Stock triggers I have seen, have been between 10 and 12#, and not that smooth. The polished ones, and some RRA's have been between 8# to 6/7#. Being as most of my hunting rifles have a 3# SS trigger, I chose to make that a mod on my AR. BUT.....you make good points on getting some range time in first.

Yeppo! I stand corrected. For some reason I was thinking the Geisels were a copy. Thanks for clearing it up.

Honestly, the trigger is the last thing I think I will upgrade. Never understood why going from 8lb pull to 4lb is such a big deal....

Trigger is one of the biggest factors on accuracy. If the trigger is sloppy, your groups wont be as good as they can be.

I know we've discussed this before but I'll just say that $10 JP trigger&hammer springs in my mind is a better value than expensive drop in triggers but that's just one man's opinion.;)

trigger for sure after a <100$ you want to spend around 250$ atleast on a scope more if its a red dot....I have used everything under 100$ nothing is worth wasting the money on. my trigger on my .308 in set in the oz. weight around 10oz. cut my groups in half (penny size at 200yrds)

Are local gun shows a great place to find cheap AR gear? I'd like to add iron sights, front handle/rail system, and maybe the .22 conversion kit.

Not here. After you pay for parking and/or admission there just isn't any good deals to make up for that. YMMV.
I get most everything from the web. Just don't cheap out on stuff because it's cheap for a reason. For real.
