If I had the gas saver car and the 2nd gen tacoma, I would sell the tacoma and buy and older beater yota and not worry about the dings and dent and just run it til the wheels fall off. Those older, smaller trucks can be alot of fun.

The first few trucks I owned (and I've owned my share) were 2wd... I used them as city daily drivers with the occasional need to haul some household item. To me then they were just a sporty alternative to a car and one that had some added functionality.

But since I bought my first 4wd truck and actually took it off-road... I will never buy a 2wd truck again... with apologies to our 2wd/Prerunner brethren... to me, a 2wd truck seems like half a truck. Like you are missing one of the greater functions of buying a truck in the first place.

Like I said though... when I was a city-only boy that thought never occurred to me... but now that I camp regularly and drive on back roads/rugged terrain buying a 2wd truck seems like having a gun but no bullets. :)

BTW... I don't go out looking to go wheelin'. I am not looking for the most wicked path I can find to "see" if my truck can make it down it... no, I just happen to go places where sometimes I need the 4wd capability. In those cases I am looking for the easiest route out of or through the situation... and just being able to have those front wheels engaged solves a lot of problems and gives a lot of peace of mind.

Anyway, like I said... I wouldn't own a 2wd truck again... but YMMV... to the OP then... I say, yeah, if you can afford it... get the 4wd.

I'm still looking hard at 4x4 options. Seems REALLY hard to find used 4x4's here. Hell even new 4x4's seem very hard to come by. 80 percent of the trucks on the lots are prerunners. I may go by my local dealer this weekend and try to at least get a baseline for what the financing would be on a potential trade.

That actually isn't a bad idea. I'd love to tow a badass 80's pickup to some trails. Let me know if you find a kickass one in SC cuz i'd totally be interested.

just a thought but why dont you trade your 10' in for like and 08-09 TRD OR 4x4 with 20-30k miles? the cosmetic features between them wouldnt be that different and youd have the exact same performance PLUS 4x4, just my .02

Actually it happens quite frequently to members on this site. They go wheeling with 4x4s and get stuck. And the 4x4s pull em out

You're a fucking idiot. This is the same stupid logic people use when saying someone should get a 2wd over a 4wd in snowy conditions. The vehicle is more capable so the driver is automatically going to get into a situation worse than if the vehicle was 2wd. Is every person and idiot or something? I think some people actually know how to drive their truck and use caution even if they drive a 4wd. If you're going out offroading with a chance of getting stuck you should have some sort of backup, another vehicle to come along to pull you out if needed or someone you can call.

OP, getting an older toyota pickup or something pretty cheap and towing it with your current truck to the trails would be a good idea imo.

4x4 adds lots of extra initial cost, more stuff to break, and worse gas mileage. It's your money, get what you want.

Oh yeah, worse gas mileage........maybe 1 MPG, if that. I hate people who complain about gas mileage in trucks and SUVS.

Yeah its a bit more money but not much. As for mpg, im getting 15 or so now anyway, so who cares. This truck will not be my dd. There might be more stuff to break but with part time 4wd systems it just means 4wd might not work til u fix it but ur truck will still work in 2wd. Plus ive read many stories here about ppl that drove home in fwd when the rear end gave out, so you have that capability. Im trying to figure a way to trade with my dad's 08 prerunner then tradin that in for a 4wd. He could use my lower mileage truck as he is daily driving his truck and has 5 years til he wants to retire

Yea that pretty much sums it up. Just driving by all the prerunners on the mammoth turnoff who have to get out in the blizzard and put chains on makes it worth while. Not to mention all the trailheads that have prerunners parked! Sort of like all the v6 Mustang owners who say I wish I would've got the v8!!! JMOP -- Oh and I've owned both 2wd and 4x4's. For some the prerunner is ok but it sounds like the OP is wanting a 4x4
