Buy an older Jeep is the way to go IMO. Just look for one that's been lightly abused. JK's are sweet, but they've gotten way too car and not enough Jeep. That's why I have a TJ Rubicon. Modding a Jeep, or any vehicle, is expensive. But, it's expensive because you should only be buying parts that you can trust and depend on in the middle of no where.

I also got a Rubicon because it comes with everything I need; lockers, 4:1 t-case, 44's f/r, etc... I don't plan on ever upgrading my axles or my t-case because I don't plan on running anything larger than 37" DOT approved tires (opposed to red label stickies that would require some other slight modifications).

If you don't need those things or plan on upgrading them anyway, getting a base model Jeep would be the way to go. They come with a D30 front, which is a good axle, but not nearly as good as a 44. Avoid getting an older Jeep that has a 30 front and 35 rear. There is no bigger joke in the Jeep world than a Dana 35 rear axle, they suck off-road and you can't even argue in their defense.

What kind of Jeep you get really depends on what you'll be doing with it. You can PM me with any questions or just post them up here for the benefit of anyone interested in Jeeping or some general off-road tech questions.

My truck is what I drive daily. Before, when I had my 2001 Jeep Cherokee, I drove it only to work and back. I drove my wife's 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee on the weekends because it was a lot nicer. Now that I have my 2011 truck, we drive that on the weekends now.

Tacoma is my DD, but I am homebound parent so my annual mileage is often in the 10k range. When traveling, or on long weekends and vacations we use the Accord. I have not had the Taco offroad, but I do sometimes work on jeep trails. I plan to mod it so I have a bit more functionality in the light duty offroading that I do.

Mine is a DD, but more or less my mobile office. Got it last November, and it sits at 28000 miles today.

Mine is my DD unfortunately :( I say unforunately due to the fact it goes 45 miles (90 round trip) to work. I don't want my baby having to do all that. But it'll pay off one day, i'm sure

My taco is my DD and off-roader. I have a F-150 on 33's that I used for a trail rig until I took my taco four wheeling one day. Weird I know... I don't drive the ford anymore unless the taco is being worked on. :notsure:

My 2010 is my DD, but I like having the choice of driving my 2000. Sometimes, my wife drives the Taco and I drive her 2011 Kia Sorento SX that is a super-nice SUV with lots of power. I have a 2010 Camry SE that I drive as well, but it basically sits in the garage. We let my in-laws use it from time to time.

Yes. It's not only my daily driver but I love it so much that it's my day off driver too. My other cars sit so I have to jump start them sometimes.

Yepper, my Taco is my daily driver and I love driving it. My Taco is quick, good looking, the gas mileage is 19-20 in town (if I keep my right foot in control) AND,..it is paid for. What more could one expect from a truck. :D
