One thing to look for, that I found when I was a member on the wrx forums, is that it is very common for folks to sell a car that was heavily modified/abused, after returning it to stock. People would do it all the time. Then folks think they are buying a stock vehicle, and when something goes wrong, the dealership hooks the ecu to the computer and sees it has been modified/restored several times. Then they say FU on the warranty claim.

Seriously it happened dozens of times on that forum.

Damn! That would really suck. In the description of the white car it says adult owned and traded in on outback. I guess it wouldn't hurt to have a mechanic look at it. Plus thats shitty of the dealer to pin it on the owner if they never tuned the car. Dealer should've checked before hand.

My car was heavily tuned, and I took it all off tow when sold it. It told the dealer all of this when I traded it in.

When it threw the rod through the block (which was due to the stock ecu, not the tune....2007s had a big issue) the guy filed a warranty claim innocently and they told him to go screw himself because they plugged it in and saw it was at one time overwritten. $8000 later he had a running car.

I'm sure the dealer sold my car as "stock engine" with wheels/tires/lowered suspension.

Good to know. Get the car's ECU at a dealer checked before buying it.

In reality it's no different with Tacos, except most mods we throw on are not ECU-related.

I got a '11 Impreza base model. No problems with it so far.

Damn.... Is it easy to check whether or not they have been tuned?

Yeah I bet you could take it to a subie dealer and have them plug it in.

The deal is that the ecu serial number or whatever has a number of let's say 2345432.0

If you overwrite it, it now has a number of 2345432.1.

If you return it to stock, it now has a number of 2345432.2

They could probably check that fairly easily.

So mine of course had like a 2345432.25 or something lol

I'm not trying to tell you not to get one, because they are awesome cars, but I was heavily involved in the Subaru community before this, and those people do some crazy shit to these cars, and then part them out and sell them as stock. I just want you to be aware of that.

If you are thinking of getting one seriously I would join nasioc.com (north American Subaru impreza owners club). It's the TW of subies. I'm sure you will benefit from it.

Beware they are brutal though so definitely search!

I was thinking the subbie forums would be harsh. Just like the jeep forums. Hence why I have been to the jeep forum in awhile. Guy jumped on me for a comment on duratracs.

I purposely took the huge wing off because cops used to follow me around when I had it on, waiting for me to make a mistake. Also it completely blocks your rear view. The spoiler I had on there for the pic was the STI limited edition one.

also my subaru-owning friends who had the huge wing used to get their cars keyed, etc, because people figured they thought they were big shots with the huge wing. The less attention the better.
