Hey codde the I-4 will haul both of your bikes without issue, with that said it won't be as snappy as a 6 cyl. It will handle 75 mph, but your revs will be up there, also with that said the I-4 has 4.10 gears, just like the 6, so even my revs will be up there. I was looking for a I-4 when my 6 came about and the deal was too good to pass up, shun the fear ! get the I-4, learn to drive it like a 4 cyl. experience the characteristics and you will not regret it.

DCLB is about 3" longer. Surprised me too.

Ah, the long bed is what puts it over. I can believe that. I've got the short bed. The long bed wouldn't have fit in my garage!

One thing I forgot to mention was that I'm getting the 4x4 version, but that shouldn't make a difference right?

I thought about the I4. But I wanted my truck as a family hauler as well. CrewCab was a must and the I4 was not available. Secondly, I have hills galore by me. The highway I most frequent the Taconic State Pky basically cuts through mountains to get to the city. The 6 sometimes has to drop to third to make it up some of the steep hills and keep the 60-65mph...

I really wanted a Crew Cab, but since I have no kids it wasn't a big deal. I enjoy only hauling my hot wife and our 3 dogs. :D Budget constraints and high mileage caused me to need the 4 cylinder more than the V6.

The 4WD makes so little difference in the weight these days. If I had been smarter at the time, I would have gotten my 2.7L Tacoma AccessCab as a 4WD model instead of PreRunner. So many guys with 2.7L 4WDs are getting close to what I get in fuel economy that it makes me sick to my stomach. Oh well. :(

I'm shopping for a 2008 Tacoma 4x4 w/access cab and was wondering if I would be better off with a 4 or 6 cylinder. I'll be putting a lot of HWY miles on it and usually drive btwn 75 and 85mph. I'll be doing some light to mid weight hauling, lots of hunting, not too serious off-road driving, carrying firewood and tools. I now live in the hudson Valley but will be moving to Washington State in 2009 were i'll be doing steeper and muddier climbs.

What will hold up the best for me?

I'd recommend the 6 cylinder for what your wanting the truck to do based on the above. If mpg is a major concern and not needing to tow over 3500 lbs, than possibly the 4 cyl would be ok, but the power of the 6 is nice to have.

    ^^Hundson Valley I-87 speedway where everyone does 75-85... Assuming a Access cab 4x4? Your 3 choices: 4cyl 5spd, V6 6spd, and V6 auto.

Besides the power, you'll probably get the best mileage at those speeds with a V6 auto. If you weren't always on interstate or stayed around the speed limit, the 4cyl would be fine and get the best mpg.

I doubt I'd be towing over 3500 and any towing will be infrequent and the way gas is these days it's certainly a issue. I guess my biggest concern is will I over work the engine over the long run by doing 75-85mph ont HWY on a regular basis. What about the manual on the V6 at that speed limit?

We really like our 2.7 liter 4x4. With a light foot we get around 20-21 around town and up to 23-24 hwy.
Of course if you drive it hard your mileage will drop.

It wheels pretty decent although the mud flaps are useless and get in the way and it could benefit from a 3" lift and large tires.

I would buy it again unless of course Toyota brought in a diesel Hi-Lux. :)

75-85 not an efficient speed for the 6spd, 2700-2900 rpm. Auto will be about 300 lower. Manual 6th has shorter gear than the Auto's 5th. Fun to drive, great for hauling and towing, but high interstate speeds it revs more and thus uses 1-2 more mpg. Then again where I'm at its hilly, no stop and go, rural roads, & state highways up to 65, I can do as good or better than auto guys. 18.8, 20.2, and 19.1 my last 3 tanks.
