Air/Army National guard help

So basically Ive been seriously thinking about joining the national guard. I went and talked to a army national guard recuriter today and recieved tons of great info!
I am in college right now and want to finish!

I really just want to know the differences between the air national guard and the army national guard.

Since you are in college, look into ROTC. Get your college paid for and go in as an Officer.

Look into SMP (Simultaneous Membership Program).

the only prob with ROTC is it's not available at all schools, yours might not have it.

difference between army guard and air guard is basically army or air force job and uniform.

find a couple army guard and air guard bases close to you and see what jobs are avaiable at from both branches and go from there.

you have a general idea what you want to do?

Army deploys for longer and has more of a combat role..the air force generally deploys for 6 months and is a lot more touchy feely than the army. Getting out of the air guard soon and I can't wait. PM me if you have any questions.

I was until they practically closed CE. I've been drilling in Fresno for the past few years. I thought about trying to go back to the 129th and trying to be an aerial gunner, but deploying and being away from home so much isn't much fun anymore.

 

Yea thats the problem my college does not have rotc!

The only problem I have with being an officer is I feel without going enlisted first I wont have that respect of a combat experinced person etc! I feel like I would be looked at like you dont know anything all you do is paper work etc.

I know I want to do itelligence or armor or avation of some type.

I can't answer your question about Army vs Air Guard, but the New Mexico Air Guard paid for my son's degree.

 

don't worry about it... there are plenty of enlisted people that have never seen combat either.

you'll earn respect through leadership.

like i said, look into what jobs are at the local guard units around you and go from there.

Yes I have thought about special forces but its just alot to think about ! On the note of special forces does the cost guard have that jw?

 

You wont have any experience regardless of if you go in at a 2nd LT. or a private.

So really you should ask yourself if you want to go in making 5 bucks and hour or 10 bucks an hour. Then ask yourself if you want to go enlisted, make your bones then start all over again as an officer.

Respect is earned not given. Being in charge doesn't mean you have to have all the answers you just need to accomplish the mission and to do that you defer to the people on your team that are the best at what it is you have been tasked with accomplishing. You will be far more respected if you aknowledge the experience of your enlisted and let them do what they already know how to do. Respect will come at a far faster pace than you think.

 

Something else to think about. Army Reserve vs. National Guard. Reserve is federally controlled, while the guard is state controlled, (while at home). The guard could have you out picking up trash every time the wind blows...if you're not into that, you might want to look into the reserves.

As for Air guard or Army, during all my army training, the air force guys had it a lot better than we did, work-wise, living quarters, etc. And, more hot chicks joined the air force than the army...lol

Officer or Enlisted is a toss up, you can go places in either if you work at it and keep your nose clean. But, you might have some young officer over you, (if you went enlisted), who might not know as much as you about your job....if it relates at all to your college degree. I had to deal with that because I had a degree in design/drafting and did drafting for the army...had to bit my tongue a few times because they thought they knew better.

Good luck in either path you choose. I loved my time in the service. Just do your best to get through BASIC without the drill sgt.s even knowing you're there if at all possible. Standing out to them is not a good thing. Wait 'til you're through all that to do your standing out...

I'm going through Army ROTC right now, and am gonna hit up the SMP program when my waiver comes through...
I have a bunch of friends that went through the Army National Guard, and they wish they went active (A little bias though...They regret it because of job security. the Big island isn't the best place for NGs to find jobs) Are you set on going NG?

and as far as the respect thing, check out my thread about ROTC cadets right under this one. Respect is earned. If you enlist first, you have that much more- but theres bad prior enlisted, as there are bad non-enlistees.
