    ok i am new to toyota, but have been researching all i can about the tacoma. i really think they are great trucks, and am considering trading my 2004 ford f150 in for a 2nd gen tacoma. money aside, in your own opinion, what are the pros and cons of owning a toyota tacoma vs a ford f150, both 4x4. can anyone push me over the edge? im a big ford fan. show me the light.

    any problems with servicing the 4L v6 engine? any special spark plugs? (i have the dreaded f150 5.4L plug problem.) is the tacoma engine almost maintenance free? ive just had alot of problems with the f150, its on its second engine, rebuilt transmission.

    and as a bonus, try to convince my wife a truck is not a truck, can a tacoma win her heart as well instead if just roll her eyes with another "you dont need to get another truck"

    I came from a '99 F-150 that died after the second run around with the 5.4L spark plug problem. Overall, servicing the engine of the 4.0L V6 is immensely easier than the Ford 5.4L. Unless you need a full size truck, the Tacoma is the better option IMHO. My double cab long bed does everything the F-150 did and more. The only thing I miss is the captains chairs option. The things mentioned by Whip are general problems you could face. There are other issues you could face, but every vehicle is different. Overall I'm much happier fixing design flaws in the Tacoma then I was fixing the design flaws in the F-150. Plus, getting 19+ MPG is a lot better than the ~13MPG I was getting in the Ford.

    HOWEVER, they are NOT...waterproof :eek:

    EDIT: In terms of build quality though, food for thought. I still drove my truck, with a hole in the block, two broken conneting rods and running on only 4 cylinders.

    You have to consider your needs. I have a 2.7 stick 4X4. That's what I need. You should get 200-300,000 on a 2.7. It's easy to maintain - cheaper to maintain - a clutch is cheaper then a auto trans - gets pretty good mileage - always gets me there in winter - rides like a car so she likes it. If you need to haul heavy stuff on a regular basis get a heavy duty truck if not get a Tacoma IMHO.
