Need Advise... 6spd tranny problem after switching to synthetic oil

OK heres the story. Got the 6 speed manual taco used and the tranny felt great except for a little buzzin shifting from 2nd to 3rd that only occurred when the truck was cold. Once it started to warm up it would quickly disappear.

then i decided to make the switch to synthetic gear oil and went with some Mobil 1 full synthetic 70/90. I drained the old stuff out and pumped in the new, filling it with almost 2 whole quarts and it started spilling out the fill hole. Sealed it back up and thought i was done.

I go for a test drive and the problem arises again. The same grindage between 2nd and 3rd but it is much more noticeable now and remains prominent until the truck is fully warm. (keep in mind that I am in So Cal and when i say cold its really not that cold haha)

Here are my thoughts and questions:

is the synthetic stuff to thin for the brute taco tranny?

is it just taking longer to warm up?

does oil have a break in period? It has been almost a week...

did i put enough in? I added as much as i could, until it spilled out...

Will swapping in some Redline or Royal Purple help?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

 

Could be too thin and/or maybe taking longer to warm up since it is more efficient. I had to have the dealer throw heavier gear oil in my 6spd sentra because it had the same problem going from first to second. The heavier oil made it shift much smoother.

ya im also thinking that it is to thin. Im just curious if the expensive stuff like Redline is any heavier.

 

No break in period for oil, shouldnt have to warm up, and I highly doubt a more expensive oil will cure what you're experiencing unless the oil specifies that it will attempt to resolve gear issues.
My opinion...its an issue w/ the trans/gears/synchros. It doesnt sound like the new fluid made any change, one way or the other.
Personally, if I was experiencing the problem, already changed trans fluid and I still experienced the issue, I would try a bottle of lucas trans slip fix stuff. Whatever its called. If that didnt do it, then I would look into fixing the actual issue, assuming it was bad enough to warrant the repairs.

I put the Heavy shockproof into my friends temperamental 6speed tranny in his Nissan and it improved shifting by 200%!

The weird thing though is that the problem surely became worse After I made the switch to synthetic...

I guess my next move is trying some Redline Heavy ^. But I noticed the site says it isn't recommended for most synchro applications. Is it ok for tacomas?

 

6sp gear boxes only holds 2qts?

I know when I was short a bit of fluid I'd grind.

As I stated... We put it in my friends 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R SpecV with 6speed synchronized transmission. He has been running it in his tranny for over a year with no issues.

 

Personally, I would switch back to oem fluid. See how it reacts, then if needed do an additive.

 

2005 manuals are notorious for being pieces of shit. That's why Toyota quietly redesigned them for the 07 model year. Sme early 06s suffer from the same issues.

There's threads all over TTORA of 05 ManTrans crapping out.

Seems like Aisin phoned in the early design. ToMoCo is aware of the problem, seems the response if under warranty is to fix with the new upgraded parts. No TSB that I'm aware of...just stealth repairs/replaced parts.

 

I also changed to syn gear oil over a week ago. yesterday it wouldnt go n 3rd and this am it was hard to shift in all gears . once again if it came stock stick with it if it was good eneough from the factory its good eneough

 

when its cold try double clutching from 1st to 2nd and see if it still happens
