I'm sure it's handy, but my concern is with factory-installed electronics designed, manufactured, and supported by third parties instead of Toyota. What if Homelink goes belly up ten years from now, or refuses to support it after a specified amount of time?

That's what bothers me about Entune because the software comes from Microsoft. Those turds have a bad history supporting older products. Windows XP users are screwed come April 2014 when they stop issuing security patches. What are we supposed to do if Microsoft pulls the same crap with Entune in 10-15 years?

Have they divulged how much Entune will cost after the three years are up?

I think it's dishonest for Toyota to be advertising Entune without that info.

    1. If the homelink stops working (there is no internet connection or mothership), you fix it. It's just a universal remote built in. If you can't fix it, you clip your garage door opener on it.

    2. Entune is built on QNX (same as the playbook and BB7.0). Microsoft Sync (as is found in Fords) is built on Microsoft technologies.

And, I've never been one to be a Microsoft backer, but
"Those turds have a bad history supporting older products"
    Is ridiculous.

Name a single piece of consumer software not found in embedded systems that receives patches for 13 years (XP was released in 2001). Time to upgrade, my friend.

Not that I can tell - a ton of people are asking about it on their Facebook wall and they have yet to comment, except that it is a factory-installed option and not compatible with older models.

Thanks... I was told Microsoft has more to do with Entune than just the Bing maps. Can you confirm or deny that?

Your argument about XP is ridiculous. I bought a brand new Asus Netbook Laptop in 2009 that came with Windows XP. Those computers were designed for internet use and in a matter of 5 years I won't be able to safely use it for that purpose anymore without upgrading to Windows 7.

Whatever the case, can Toyota owners be assured that Microsoft continues to support their Bing maps on Entune for the next 15-20 years?

My argument about XP is ridiculous? LOL! Do you know what remains of the original win32 api that microsoft has kept in their OS to support sh1tty old software? Microsoft announced back in 2008 that they would stop selling XP. OEMs kept complaining, so microsoft extended it a year... TWICE.

Your computer will not cease to work in 2014. You will stop receiving OS updates. You bought the computer at it's current state (8 years of maturity) and Microsoft got maybe $10-$20 bucks from that. out of that money they have given you an additional 5 years of support. Thus, you paid $10-$20 for 5 years of support (O, and the actual product itself ;)).

Thanks for making me smile today. :-D

p.s. Don't use IE and don't click on random links or random plugin installations and you'll be fine. You don't need antivirus if you've got common sense.

Talked to my dealer a few months back and said he thought leather was an option...yesterday he told me that it had been confirmed and will not be an option. kinda sucks but it can be done after market for about $2,000.

P.S. the computer I'm using is operating Windows XP and it works better than my vista computer for the entune microsoft conversation.

The netbook was a brand-new product in 2009. Microsoft let Asus put Windows XP on it. Your "additional 5 years of support" is silly. What do you mean additional?

By that logic, if there's something wrong with Bing maps on the 2012 Tacomas, all we can hope for is an "additional" support period to get it fixed.

An earlier post (weeks ago) said that only the Double Cabs would get Entune.

If that's really true, how are the non-Entune dashboards going to look? I'm thinking they could use the same faceplate but without the flashy video screen. Any ideas?

I think that post also said only (select) 2wd tacoma's. I asked Toyota with no response. The PDF we just got that shows the interior states that it is a 4X4 double cab...I'm guessing it is going to be an optional item that works with another package like JBL and XM.

I might have answered my own question. The view looking straight down shows different configurations.

Access Cab on the left (no Entune) and Double Cab on the right (Entune)
The Access Cab has large radio knobs, a smaller lowered display, and maybe it's just me but what's happening on the top where the CD is inserted? Almost looks like a cassette player up there. LOL

The good news? The left side looks upgradeable to Entune or an aftermarket display being the same size.
